Telling the sex of a baby at 12 wks...

Ok, i'm 13 weeks pregnant. I had a scan last week (12 wks). I asked the sonographer if she thought she could tell the sex of the baby, she said she thought it was a boy but that it could have been the umbilical cord, i asked her what percentage she based that on and she told me she could'nt give me a percentage as she was'nt sure and it's too early to tell.
I have a son and i'd really like a girl this time.

Would she have even hinted anything if she was'nt sure? How accurate is it for them to determine sex at this stage?

i'd wait until you are 20 wks. im guessing your in the states as you called it a sonographer. I had always been told in the UK that you couldn't tell by the 12weeks scan.

at 20 weeks they have an 80% chance of getting the sex of baby right.

I would wait for your 20wk scan too - but don't build your hopes up, my sister went for her 20wk scan yesterday and they couldn't tell as the baby had it's legs crossed!!!

I know, with my son the guy said there was a 90% chance it was a boy, when i gave birth it was! But i do know couples who could'nt be told for that reason.

The general concensus all through my wife's last pregnancy was that it probably a boy and hey presto it was a girl so they must have been looking at the cord as well.

I had to have a CVS test at 14 weeks and they do a scan beforehand, told me they thought it was a girl.

Got the results back a couple of weeks later to be told it was a boy (100% sure as they check chromosomes - plus he is 2 now and definitely a boy!!)

I think that I shouldn't have been told at that stage, I got all excited and started thinking about pink things etc, for it to actually be wrong. I know they can't be 100% accurate anyway from a scan (as opposed to tests etc), but they should at least leave it until it is more likely to be accurate.

I had a CVS test too and they asked if I wanted to know but I decided not too. I think the last part of pregnancy is hard going and you need that boost of a surprise to keep you going on the big day!
