I havent got Word or other Office applications installed on my pc. A friend has given me a disc with Office XP professional edition, but no instructions. What do I need to do?

Make sure you have the product key.
Put the CD in the CDrom. The CD should start itself.
Follow on-screen instructions. Easy Peazey.

Not sure as it is a long time ago since I installed mine, but if your friend had been lending the CD out willy-nilly, you may find that it can not be registered. Microsoft only allows a few registrations per year on each number.
You could try openoffice instead:
http://www.openoffice.org/

It's free and 95% compatible with Microsoft Office.
As fo3nix says, try open office. I have legal copies of MS Office for both my machines, but have uninstalled it from my main machine because I actually prefer open office (I have to keep it on the other, so that I can support my clients who use it)
