uninsured vehicle

i was bought a new car as a gift ,as i already had a vehicle i changed my insurance over to my new car,my old car was parked outside my home as my friend was coming to buy it from me within 2 days of me changing my insurance over to my new vehicle my car was taken from outside my home by the local police,the car was taxed and had full mot certificate,i was not aware that i should have had the car insured if i was not driving it,consequently i had to appear in court,was fined 135 pounds and had 6 points added to my licence,as i have only held a licence for 18 months,i will now have to revoke my licence and take my test again. I am currently on an apprenticeship with network rail and have been since leaving school 3 years ago,i have nearly completed my training,and have put in a lot of hard work and effort into succeeding,this has now brought me right down i am currently feeling suicidal,as i will have to give up my career,as i have to use my car to travel from liverpool to portsmouth as part of my training process i do not feel that this is justice,i am an honest hard working person do not do drugs or drink and feel i am a law abiding citizen,this has totally wrecked my life and i do not know what to do would appreciate some advice regarding this as i cannot afford a solicitor to help me
