Eccentrics
13 Answers
How many true eccentrics do you know? The government would like everyone to conform and eat the same food, not smoke, only drink so many units etc.
Do you know anyone who sticks their fingers up to the government and goes on their own merry way in life?

I mean, I have to pay bills. I have to pay a mortgage. Therefore I have to have a job. That in itself makes me conventional and conformist. I don't drink hardly, and I don't smoke so I don't rebel in that way.. I am sounding very boring! Who are the rebels? I have some friends who choose not to work, and DON'T claim benefits. They busk for a living. So I guess they are more eccentric than I am?
Bloody Government.
This is quite interesting really. On the one hand I am ultimately conformist, totally respect the law (apart from speeding maybe!) and despise rebellious people.
On the otherhand I rarely follow government advice re public health and what (not) to do.
I drive a 6 litre car, but am still very green!! And according to the BBC website, my carbon footprint is below average!!
I eat proper butter, not this left-wing marg type yellow muck called low fat utterly sh!tterly, or whatever, but am still healthy.
I drink way too much according to "Home Office" recommendations, but have been drunk about 3 times this decade, and have normal kidneys and liver.
I never eat brown bread, brown rice or Allbran, yet am as regular as clockwork.
I do not smoke however, and although a big part of me does not like being told what to do by parliament, I am glad the no-smoking ban is now enforced.
So am I a rebel? Probably not.

What do you mean by the government ? Please explain. It's old hat, I blame the gumment, it's disgusting etc etc.
There are eccentrics who poke gentle fingers at certain daft conventions without harming anybody, and there are others who poke violent fingers at society's good rules, aka criminals.
If you want to smoke or drink yourself silly, go ahead, it's not illegal.

There is a chap in my villiage who is definately eccentric, he walks around wearing hippy clothes, the whole flowers round his neck thing. He hangs bottles , tins, foil wrappers on his trees in garden, hes painted the whole of his house outside bright blue, and has a collection of carrier bags stuffed with God knows what in his garden... now thats eccentric, by the way he is in his 50s.
I think to live in society generally, there are certain things you need to conform to-for example, unless you fancy wiring someone else's meter (theft), then you have to pay for your electric consumption.
I think striving to be eccentric or odd or different kind of negates the definition of eccentricity, because awareness of your oddness means you are TRYING. Whereas, just BEING eccentric means that you always move towards an alternative way of thinking or doing.
I do my own thing, and also in my work I challenge popular perceptions and prejudices, but you have to pick your battles, and be subtle in your approach.

some of the most ordinary people I have ever met claim ''i'm mad me'' and consider themselves eccentric because they don't like kylie, or do some hobby like ship bottling.
I used to have a friend who dressed like marilyn manson - and claimed it was because just wanted to be different and individual - i explained she had just swapped one tribe for another, and pointed out all the other identikit weekend goths around her, but she didn't really understand.
I don't mind genuine goths etc, people who really believe and it is the way they are, but her transformation was almost over night and in response to a new friend she'd made
having a few minor eccentricities (which we all have) and being truly eccentric are two very different things
i would say i veer towards being an eccentric, and was certainly pretty eccentric when i was younger - to the point of abuse in the street - but would have some way to go towards being a true eccentric nowadays (though I have been called it a few times)
