Assassination is where the murderer has no personal motivation for killing - typically they're politically-motivated murders, if you take 'politically' in its widest sense.

Technically, the speccy little man who happens to be your local councillor could be assassinated.

I think that assasination is when a person is killed because of what they represent.

Usually politics! Even John Lennon who was no politician, was assasinated as he reprisented a politacal view!
