Just got back from the cinema. I really liked it.
It's basically an old-fashioned diaster movie with some groovy effects: scientist predicts disaster and is ignored, there are a few scenes foreshadowing the big disaster to come, then all hell breaks loose and the hero has to step up to the plate to save his family. There's even the familiar: estranged wife/kids who the hero still loves, terminally ill kid, friends who will risk everything to help the hero and a cute dog.
However, the whole point of the movie is the spectacle and it's certainly spectacular! (Cue whinging about "shoddy CGI"work  ).
I can't see it going down too well Stateside: the Prez comes off as a bit wet, and the Vice Prez (at least until the **** has smashed the fan into tiny pieces) a self-serving idiot, and the US has to go cap in hand to Mexico for aid...
If you want to see a sensible or original movie, don't bother with this one. if you want to see all kinds of hell being torn out of the LA and New York (though GB, India and Japan get a slight look in), see this movie.
