Some people think that mass immigration will spark off civil war in Britain.

Just supposing there was some global catastrophe that made millions of Third World people flock to Britain, so that our society changed out of recognition as 'British'.

Two options:

(1) either we could adapt to the new world and learn to get along with one another, or

(2) we could keep out 'aliens' and try to keep Britain 'British'.

If we chose option (2), what would be the point? would people really want to do this? If so, why?

Maybe a third option here is that we learn to adapt and those coming to the country also learn to adapt. I think we should encourage immigration especially in times of disaster.

What? you mean something like a global rise in temperatures causing increased dessertification, caused by large scale use of fossils fuels in the deveopled world?

Something like that?
From what I read, it seems to me that pretty soon most of England will be underwater - maybe YOU will be the refugees hoping for tolerance and acceptance from those lucky enough to have been born in safer places?
