What's the difference between being British & English?

I've know people to say they are British and some say they are English. What's the difference?

If your English you come from England, if your British you come from Britian

british is a part of the union, wales, scotland, channel islands etc, english is if you come from england.

Britain is England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland, so anone frome any of these countries is British,

Used to be, Eng/Brit etc, but this Goverment has done away with those nation states, and we are all just British, or as they tell us, European.

No such thing as being English, Scottish, Welsh, N.Irish, although tell that to the people from those countries.

concieved in England to English Parents that were born in England.
im also British because i was born in England.
England being the largest of the four countries that makes up Britain.

I am from England, therefore i am English!

Don't like calling myself British as its innacurate and too vague. That could make me either English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish!
I hate it when we dont get the choice to put which country we are from on forms etc.

unrulyjulie how could calling yirsel British make you Irish? Briish is the Nationality and Scots (for now at least) English and Welsh are not nationalities

I live here and I;m confused.

How come sometimes our sportsmen compete for GB, or UK.

Then along comes a football tournament and we put four teams in.

If a foreigner asked me I couldn't explain it.

Perhaps we should let Germany enter teams from Bavaria and Prussia.
