Are racists ashamed of themselves?

There's a current thread in the news section
in which there are some quite obviously racist comments but some, at least, of those making them add that they are not actually racist. Why do people deny that they are racist when they are?

Most of us are all, in our own little way, racist to some degree.
We can't help it. We are human, more closely related to sheep than any other animal.

In some ways yes I am but when I look out into my country and see the problems we are having due to this influx of immigrants I feel that we need to be very concerned about what we are losing in the way of our own culture and history. We should be proud of what we are.
We have as a nation conributed much to the world.
We are not America, a nation whos very existance as a nation was built by immigrants and who suffer more racism than most other countries.

It's because people are now so paranoid about being accused of racism, that any comment which remotely touches on race issues including immigration, religion, etc, must now begin with the obligatory disclaimer 'I'm not a racist but....'.
However, in a sly outflanking manouver, sanctimonious twits are now beginning to claim that use of the disclaimer is in itself evidence of racism, so we're back at square one.

I think that people do that because racism has been characterised as criminal offence. I personally believe that judging and then hating someone only due to what the colour of their skin is wrong and therefore people should avoid that in any civilised society. Within that society other people should oppose that sort of behaviour as I am sure that these people are always minority in any society. However it should not be a criminal offence otherwise people will go under the disguise and no one would be able to tell the difference.

The other day 3 men harrased and insulted an Indian woman on her own at a bus stop, I was disgusted.
I see people talk about the problems caused by immigration, I don't see asylum seekers smashing up bus stops, I don't see illegal immigrants p1ssing in phone boxes or basically hither and yon, I've never been spat at by a p@ki, or be told I'm going to get killed by an Oriental, I see day after week after week my own country men destroy the fabric of our land and it depresses me greatly. I do not recognise my people anymore, baby's battered to death, dogs with enormous heads being the fashion, a man set on fire for being asleep on a train what happened to my people? When did they go so mental?

123 everton, I am in no way racist, I believe that anyone who wants to come to this country, contribute, and be a real part of society is welcome. You say we don't see illegal immigrants doing this or that. It's because we DON'T see them. The government has lost most of them. I agree that the majority of people who come to this country want to work and create a better life for themselves and their families. But you can't ignore the few who are exploiting it.
Many years ago the National Front used to march and say that the reason there is so much poverty in Britain is because of the immigrants (there's nothing new in this question) people like Ricky Tomlinson believed it and joined, then one day he had an epiphany he marched through a black area and saw poverty worse than his own, so where was all the money going?
The point is I see more of my own people doing more to destroy my own country than any foreigner I've ever met, I tend to feel that many people are scatching where it does'nt itch to suggest otherwise.
For example a Polish woman got on with her teenagd daughter a while ago, neither spoke particuarly good English but they both knew please and thankyou, try getting that of some people.
I'm on a real down about this country at the mo, the people I see and read aboutmake me what to be sick.

I can answer that: Since parents lost the knowledge of how to parent, since kids can't be disciplined by teachers, foul language is just accepted, violence is freely shown on TV/cinema/computer games and the individual became of paramount importance.
Now, I know that this is a generalisation and that there are many good parents/teachers/role models out there; but they are fighting a losing battle and becoming rarer by the year.
