Disappearing social lives.

How many of you think that the next generation will lose the ability to interact with others face to face and their social lives will cease to be owing to the demise of the Pub and Clubs and shops etc in the UK and the ever growing number of computers on line shopping/gaming and games machines in our society?
I grew up in a non electronic environment and interacted with many people and knew my place in the structured society, now all this is being lost and I fear a world of automotons with no sense or thought for anyone but themselves.

I live in a town of neanderthols (sp?) and I don't want to interact with 'em!

As it is, we're trying to save up and move to an area where the locals don't scrape their knuckles on the ground when they walk and interact with each other by grunting swearwords at each other.

Guess that doesn't answer your question, but until i'm surrounded by human beings i'll stick to my online world- it's far nicer.

I don't think they will loose it entirely, bandit but I do agree it will almost certainly be dimiished. When I was a lad and started going into the local miners welfare, If none of my mates were in there was always relations and their friends in or people I knew from work etc and these were from my own age group all the way through to pensioners as well as different nationalities ( there weren't many coloured people at the time but loads of east euopeans etc who had setlled here during the war years). As a result I learnt a lot about different life styles etc, but more importantly I learnt how to interact with people and to respect their beliefs, even if I didn't agree or understand them

One of the young juniors (19 y/o) in my team has over 500 facebook friends, is apparently very adept at various computer games, plays cricket every week (or football, depending on the season), goes out partying from Thursday night to Sunday night (incl) every week, and still manages to arrive at work earlier than his line managers, fresh as a daisy with bundles of energy, enthusiasm and professionalism in front of clients. With the right mentoring, this lad will go far.

I wouldn�t worry too much, the good ones will always be good, and quite aptly take personal credit. The bad will find any excuse to blame someone else for their own misgivings.

I so clearly remember people saying things like this when computer games first started appearing 30 years ago.

Truth of the matter is that some people got addicted to computer games and probably still do, but they'd probably find something else anyway.

Most of us grew up, discovered girls or boys and went on to have families and moan at the amount of time our kids playing computer games.

I have little doubt our kids will be posting questions just like this in 30 years too.

I also remember my father telling me you couldn't understand the words in music these days before going off to listen to some Italian opera!

there are a great many people for whom online friendships are their only social life...!

i have a friend who is in exactly that situation...she lives in ireland, in the middle of nowhere with 3 kids...one being a baby...coming online to chat to people is sometimes the only interaction with adults she gets....

i know i have got back in touch with many people through it...i would not have phoned them or gone to their house to visit, perhaps because some have moved to another town or it would have seemed odd to just randomly turn up...but i keep in touch online...so in a way it can widen your social life, not decrease it...

Since the smoking ban came in force i can go a week without speaking to another human. Unless you call saying please and thank you in the paper shop talking .
