When I was a teenager, I preferred to be different in my own way, so i wore my hair short and looked like a bank manager, and apart from loosing my haiir, my look has never altered.
Interestingly, as a music writer, I mix with emos, goths, punks, metalheads and so on, and I am the curiosity who gets a second look - but perfect acceptance.
In the 'straight' world where I work, I fit right in, so that suits me fine.
I do love seeing people who wear their passions on their person - with tattoos, piercings, clothing, or what ever, and i think as long as the individual is happy, then that's cool.
They are not doing it to impress me, nor would I ever want them to. i just admire quietly.

Thanks all for the discussion/answers :o)
The reason I asked is (yes, I know I'm setting myself up to be shot at, but what the heck!) I had worn a gold stud and small, but thick sleeper for about 20 yrs. One day about a year ago, I took them out (for safety reasons at work) and just never got round to putting them back in.
More than once, I've had people say they look nice on me/suit me and I was just pondering whether to put them back in.
I may do it at the weekend to see how I feel! :o)

I had my ear pierced several years ago (it was fashionable honest), but generally grew out/got fed up of it. Its not something I would revisit really, even if Eva Longoria said I looked hot with it in and she would date me well ok maybe put it in for the odd night.
Nah, I think as said, if it feels right for you do it, and be damned with the nay-sayers. Personally I am not fond of tattoos on women and earrings on men, but can see beyond that to the personality of the peeps. For example, my wife has a tattoo and we still talk occaionally when we bump into each other in the kitchen.
