The Daily Mail today is reporting that "One in every nine people in Britain was born overseas' and 'More than one in every eight people in England was born abroad'

Shock, horror!

The complaint is enhanced by the horrifying fact that the children, born here, of these foreign -borns are recorded as British !

AOG, where are you? Did you miss this ?

Does the Irish channel count fred? Should I hide in shame?:)
This is not news it is the slow decimation of our country by New Labour/
No doubt soon you will be labelled a racist or a little englander by the minority liberal eleite that have taken control of our great country.

There is nothing wrong with immigration but it must be on our terms, and it must mean immigrants adopt our way of life not theirs. Why else would they come ?

Oh stupid me, we lavish huge sums to those that hate us and wish to annilate us.

Oh dear, Mr LL and young Mr LL may be deported then.

Specifically which of 'our ways' must these new Englanders adopt?

Cultural, religious, socio-economic?

Should they eat a nice Sunday roast, speak with Oxbridge accents? Go to the footie on a Saturday afternoon, celebrate Christian festivals?

Serious question - because this idea crops up quite often.
Morris dancing and smashing up Spanish bars on our holidays.
SP, thats actually an interesting question that I'm sure would have many views.

For me I guess its mainly cultural.and to a degree socio-economic. What I'm after is mainly they speak English and 'fit in'. I believe in freedom so things like religion dont com into it unlees the religion threatens my way of life.

What I totally abhor is groups creating a community that exludes others or considers itself better or exclusive. And in this white/asian/black and gay fall.

Problems only generally arise when this happens. If everyone is included and no one considered different then alot of troubles go away.

The whites are often accused of not accepting, and this is true, but other groups do the same; of course I will be slammed as a racist and little englander but just thingk about it; it is true.
Maybe because the BBC article is from 24th June 2004?

nice to see your inaccurate prejudices are flowing well still.
youngmafblog - are you also at pains to point this out to British expats who live in other countries, or is it just in this country?

Do you also have issues with middle class people living in semi detached / detached houses and not in estates / terraced houses like working class people - or is it okay for them not to mix / integrate?
This is an interesting one.

I have posted my fair share of "anti immigration" appends on AB in the last few years, but a program this week made me think a bit.

Did anyone see "Who do you think you are" on BBC TV this week with Zoe Wannamaker?

She is jewish, as is of course her father Sam Wannamaker the actor (now dead).

To look at both Zoe and Sam you would think they and their families had been in "the west" for years, but in fact their family came over from Russia to America in the early 1900s.

MILLIONS of Jews escaped from Russia in the early 1900s, and many went to Chicago, which has the 3rd largest Jewish population after Israel and New York.

They showed a picture in the program showing the jews landing in the USA, and I have to say many had rags on, and headscarves They looked somewhat like the Muslims we see walking our streets today.

Yet within a few years these Jews were wearing western clothes, and fitting in with their "western" way of life.

Sam Wannamaker (an actor) came to England, and was one of the people who campaigned strongly for the building of the Shakespeare's Globe Theate in London.

Sadly he died just before the theatre was finished.

I guess most of his family had never even heard of Shakespeare, maybe he was the first member of his family who did.

But if his Russian family had not gone to the USA in the early 1900s, we may not have a memorial theatre in London to Englands greatest playwright.

It makes you think.
Vic, if I was living abroad I would expect to integrate and inded where I have.

I'm not sure on your 'middle class' issue. If you want to apsire then you can and move up or down as you wish.. Win the lottery then you buy what you want as Mr Carroll showed us, it has nothing to do with the community choosing or shunning you. In fact his is the Britiish way of life so what is your point on thios particular post ?
And of course if is was not for immigrants we would not have:

Tescos (formed by a son of Jewish/Polish immigrants

Marks and Spencers (Marks was a immigrant from Belarus)

(I am sure people will mention other companies formed by immigrants)

Thanks AOG. I daren't make any comment on this topic now you're aware of it LOL. Three stars, naturally

And no, obNOXious the 'Irish channel' ought to count but doesn't. Just because (like my own mother) you learned to swim across it you don't get any credit !. Now you're here with all those strange rights to vote in elections and get here without a passport, we have to ignore you!
Oneeyedvic

No need for your bottom line dig at me.

it was a genuine mistake, I searched the story and tried to give an unbalanced view from 3 separate sources.

The only trouble was the BBC decided to report only on the newspapers, carrying the story..

Sam Wannamaker (an actor) came to England.

Wasn't he a communist that had to escape from America during the Senator Joe McCarthy years, due to his suspected Un-American activities?
Is there a need for the dig AOG?

Well possibly it may make you think and analyse a little bit more before posting on a website rather than just looking at your preconceptions to explain something.

VHG, then from my point of view then if you cant tell how long then they have integrated and become a full and valuable asset to the country. In this case regardless of race/religion/creed or coloue how can anyone object.

What fuels outrage at thes figures are the communities that want to exist as a community within a community. In particular this is exacperted by those that wish us ill.

If only all immigrants wanted the same thing we would be fine and dandy. Unfortunatly with Noo labour open door policy this will not happen.

You liberal elite, many of whom are seen on this site, are to blame for this hideous experiment.

You are asking for immigrants to integrate into society. I am explaining to you that society does not integrate itself.

I have never been to a working mens club. Should I go to 'integrate' with others? I have never been to a polo match or the ballet. Does this mean I don't integrate?

A stereotypical view of a working class person would be that he does a manual job, goes home to his terraced home and on the weekends goes down to the pub. He goes out with his mates from work.

Why is this scenario different if the person is not British born? He goes to work, socialises with his friends etc etc.

Maybe you can explain how someone can integrate?
Trivial I know - but where would we be without curries, beefburgers, pizzas, spaghetti, etc etc?
If people are willing to work I welcome them. But we do need to be careful about their 'dependants' who may follow.
I would like to ship out a lot of British born and bred scroungers who just refuse to work. But who would take them? I believe Oz is no longer a penal colony - we need to find another.
Vic, your just not getting it. All of your examples are ways of British life so integrate in one of them, dont create another thast is totally alien and excludes others.

I personally have been to working mens clubs and I have been to the ballet and I have been to a polo match, I was free to do so and welcomed by each.

To integrate is to talk to the language and abide by the laws of the land, mixing freely with the 'locals' and not creating your own no go areas.

If you want it bluntly I have found many balck african/Carrabean who I can work and sociase with and do so without thingking (unless forced to by someone like you). The same cannot be said for the hordes of muslim asians can it. By the way I do actually know an imam, he has adopeted our way of life so it can be done. Ok he wont drink and lies to pray but that is fine, his choice.

Are you getting it now or are you still on the class war ?
