btec's

Hi, i'm about to take my final first year (AS level) exam and i'm beginning to think about doing a BTEC next year and keeping an A-level. The primary motive behind this is that no matter how much I love, enjoy or understand the subject, I cannot for the life of me revise; as a BTEC is only composed of coursework, this would be a much better choice. However, BTEC's are usually looked down upon. I'm wondering if it is worth taking one if I am not sure what type of job or university course I would like.
Any help or advice?

Hi Sarcasticjoe, I understand your dilemma, however it may help you to know that many universities are now accepting a wider range of qualifications.

I left college 11 years ago with only 2 GCSE's and a GNVQ Intermediate. In my opinion, back then, colleges and universities didn't want to know if you didn't have specific qualifications.

I am now a mature student and there are many options open to me. I have been studying for the City & Guilds Adult Literacy and Numeracy Level 2 which is equivalent to GCSE English and Maths grade A-C. In September I start the Access to Higher Education which is equivalent to 4 A/S Levels. My preferred University has confirmed that these qualifications will be acceptable.

I am assuming that you are a young student, in-which case, I realise that the above is not applicable to you directly, but you could contact a few universities to see if they would accept a BTEC as I feel you would be pleasantly surprised.

Hi Joe,

I did AS Levels and decided they weren't for me so I changed on to a BTEC course in Art & Design for 2 years, it did leave me a year behind my friends but it really suited me and I'm glad i chose a BTEC. With regards to universities, everybody i know at college got places at university including some of the top universities in the country. I think universities are becoming a lot more open minded to different qualifications and like i said, i had no trouble getting into a really good university :)
