Am reading a book about nasty nuns in Ireland in the 50's. Kiddies taken away from their mother & placed in a convent.

Why were most nuns so nasty back then?

Nuns can be kinda tough, I think the era you're talking about there was usually some reason for the children to be taken away delinquincy or illegitamcy. I'm not defending the reasons it just appears to me that you're suggesting that Nuns were on some sort of cradle snatching spree back then.
If you want to see real scandal then look at Tibet 1913 to 1950, if you had more than one son then you had to hand one over to the monastery once he'd reached the age of ten. Once there many of them were b u g g e r e d reguarly, that's one of the reasons why so many left upon "invasion" or "liberation" depending on your viewpoint.
Punishments were extreme also, killing a vulture was punishable by death.
And yet trendies shout "free Tibet".
There were also many abuses during the Cultural Revolution and equally so in state sponsored children's homes in the U.K, former liebensborne children in Scandanavia, on U.N.H.C.R missions (now) and of course the Aborigines in Australia.
All these abuses are indicative of people who have absolute power over a disenfranchised individual, it's more to do with a lamentable aspect of human nature then any religious ideology.
Sexual frustration?
The Bible is loaded with examples of beligerance and extreme arrogance. Their attitudes are a product of the lame philosophy they follow.
Don't let the church kid you, there are still some nasty nuns about now!
first introduction to fear, there are still some spiteful nuns around today,
MOST nuns weren't nasty.

But the ones that were...wow.
Catholic priests and nuns are permanent adolescents.

We grow up and pass through a 'teenage' phase when we are - in no particular order -

stroppy
self-centered
hyper-sensitive
uncaring of others' feelings
arrogant
thoughtless
insecure
scared
impulsive
pompous
'immortal'

and of course, we pass through the stage into adulthood, and thank goodness we do!

Clergy stay there. They never develop adult relationships in normal caring ways. They are lauded and put on pedestals as superior beings to be fawned over, and have their dreadful behaviour accepted as normal because of their 'status' in life. They never know the joys of simple human interactiobn because they live behind barriers of manners and protocol.

Of course, some priests and nuns do get past this stage of life, and become selfless serving individuals, which their calling requires.

But far more behave as above - hence the rife sexual and physical abuse that exists in Catholic institutions.

Modern society finds it increasingly difficult to encourage young people to go into the church. It has only itself to blame with its backward-lloking mysoginist archaic hierarcy, rituals, and hypocracy. So eventually, within a few generations, nuns and priests run a serious risk of becoming extinct.

Which may not be a bad thing at all.
It is due to "lording it over people" they think they are above everyone else when in actual fact they are stuck in limbo, they are like trapped rats because they have come to know of the destiny that awaits them, and it isn't just nuns, it is all the people who are trapped in so called organised religion. The human race doesn't need all the hype, pomp and circumstance of "those that pray on the corners of the street for all to see" those are the ones who will be doing the gnashing of the teeth and the wailing when the time comes, but they will only do this if people are watching. they dress differently they speak differently covering thier real identities by instilling fear on thier prey.
Some of them DO come to realise thier wrongdoing and may change thier ways, others just get more frustrated because they are blinded byt thier regality and are too proud to shed the misteachings they have undergone.

One day soon, it will all be put in order, but it can only be done by the one who created all things, that is the most logical thing that could ever be. If everyone shed there proudness (neg) then they would be able to grasp the information which has been given to them from the early times. However, to do that they would have to seek the information, study it from all angles and use the power of thier brain which was given to them, to work out the best route to take, and to steer clear of the disgusting organisations that man has set up around the world for his own "fullfilment?".
Search and you shall find... that is what we are told to do, the rest is up to us.....

Pete
So when is this day Pete?
I'm not busy tomorrow could it be then?
Come on enlighten us what is this information from the early times, who did create everything and what exactly should we be looking for?
