Folkestone - Snob Alert!

We visited a friend yesterday who lives in Folkestone and whilst there decided to stroll to the harbour to pick up some shellfish.

My god, I have never seen so many fat, tattooed people in one place in my life - it was a chavalanche!

It was as though the whole population of Dartford had decamped to Folkestone for the weekend.

Right - the question. Why, when they speak (although grunt would probably be a better description), does their volume have to be so loud? Normal people don't feel the need to let everybody within a 50 metre radius know that "its f......g hot innit".

By and large it is a class distinction Jake.

You are significantly more likely to see anti-social behaviour from a Wayne/Waynetta than you are from an Alexander/Alexandria.

I've always thought that toffs and chavs have a lot in common. For instance, both groups:

Like to speak AT FULL VOLUME
Give their children silly names
Like ostentatious cars
Eat gross food
Like ostentatious jewellery
Like Burberry
Have to holiday abroad

I have always found that you can spot a group of London school children a mile off by the "look at me - what the f*** are you lookin at" noise they make. Squealing and screaming and playing music loudly on their phones etc etc.

Speaking as Folkestonian, I can assure you that locals avoid the harbour area at all costs! This should change if the current plan for the construction of a marina come to fruition.

Coobeastie, they make the news because it is out of the ordinary, whereas anti-social behaviour of chavs is not out of the ordinary and to report it all the time would fill the daily papers many times over.

Youre almost right but the word isn't stereotype - it's prejudice.

I am completely being a snob and I am prejudiced - quite happy to admit to both.

Your Boris Johnson analogy is flawed. He wouldn't eff and blind at the top of his voice - many (most) chavs do.

They are, by and large, a horrible underclass.

The reason why 'chavs' are so noisy is because they are ignored, and / or ill-treated as children.

If you look at the average 'chav' toddler, ineraction with his/her parents is either non-existant, or consists of grunts, interspersed with shouts of "Get 'ere you little ...!"

They learn at an early age that no-one is listening to them or cares what they think and feel. This translates into attention-seeking behaviour and hyper-sensitivity to the notion of being 'dis-respected' by even a glance from a stranger.

Put money into nursery education, teach children a sense of self-worth and the ability to be nice, and you could erradicate 'chavs' in one generation.

Pardon Mr Brown? Oh yes, sorry, I forgot, you can't have an invasion force in other peoples' countries AND have a decently funded education system. What was | thinking of!

I don't think you are a snob, flip-flop. There is nothing wrong with finding antisocial behaviour unacceptable. Antisocial behaviour doesn't have to be violent, it only has to be selfish, loud and without consideration for others. There is a difference between working class people and chavs. Working class people can be good neighbours, be active in the community, be responsible parents and be honest at work or seeking work. Chavs, on the other hand are a disgrace to their class and deserve no respect as they have no respect for others.
