How to I work out the correct amount of stitches to knit and the needles to use?

This would be a geometric nightmare Kiera as you need to know the the surface area of the finished garment and do a lot of maths to arrive at the correct number of stitches etc . Then you would need to do tension squares until you arrive at the right number of stitches and needle size by which time you would be throwing it across the room in despair .
You could get yourself an Inox calculator which will convert patterns but you need to need to be a mathematical genius to use it .
I would just go and buy some 4ply wool and save yourself a headache :)
