Just saw a discarded empty box of fireworks in the street, on it is a picture of Guy Fawkes (certainly King James the 1st) having a great time with some rockets.
Why?
Shouldn't he be looking rather glum?
Or are people so dim now that they don't know what it's about or do they just not care?
P.S.
I don't bother with it much myself and never have.

i assume it's getting the same way as Christmas trees and pumpkins on Halloween. Less and less people know why we do it but everyone does it out of tradition.
I think he is happy as the Plot to blowup parliament failed!

Will probably go with family to seafront firework display.
Question Author
TTG, Fawkes was caught trying to blow it up and the King was rather miffed about it.

We have to listen to them year round! So much for only being able to sell them for the 2 weeks before. You can get them anytime in specialist shops
They are used by junkies round our town. Whoever manages to score drugs lets off a rocket and the others go round to his house. Because the signal is so short, the police can't track it down.

123everton - Maybe the picture on the box was taken when he had calmed down and had a party to celebrate Fawkes getting caught!

:-)
I think most people (Kids included) if you ask who Guy Fawkes was will tell you he tried to blow up parliament.

A lot of teenage boys like my son were into the graphic novel and film "V for Vendetta" of which that was a theme.

I think you underestimate other people's knowledge - why not ask a few and see

You don't sell fireworks (or anything) by having pictures of miserable looking people on the front.
Question Author
You are right Steve, so why not a picture of King James?
Because kids won't know who King James is. Yet they will associate Guy Fawkes with Bonfire night.
Question Author
Of course TTG, we're all liberals now, he saw the error of his ways and reformed.
A very subtle piece of irony from you, sorry I missed it first time around.
Chaps I gotta go.
Toodles.

If he's smiling who cares?
Guy Fawkes had an audience with King James on the evening of Nov 5th so he dressed appropriately for such occasion as did the King..one Cavalier looks much the same as the next so the King James I "look" was the height of fashion..all for one and one for all kind of thing im guessing.
