Tipping

1.What is the accepted norm nowadays as regards whether to tip or not in a restaurant .

2. if you are going to tip - what amount would be reasonable

3. If the bill has a service charge added - are you obliged to pay this service charge or can you ask for it to be removed

I usually tip £5 and only if the service is good. I don't see the point for any more than that.

Don't do as I do, do as I say.
Tell them you don't get tipped for doing your job so you ought not be subjected to being made to feel guilty for not tipping others. If they are not paid enough then they should negotiate with the skinflint employer for a living wage, or find another job where they're not abused so.

1. accepted norm is whatever you feel right.
2. reasonable amount iw whatever you feel you should and can afford.
3. AFAIK you can ask for a service charge to be removed. Not sure if there has to be a reason though. Serve them right if you have the courage to, overheads for things like service should be covered in the price of the meal.

thats just it...it is all in the price of the meal...its just the well-meaning over generous people who have turned what was once gesture of reward to someone who has doen something extra or special, into expected and almost demanded regardless of the level of service and courtesy...
