Ive read and heard a few remarks along the lines of: "I'm ashamed to be English" kind of remark, because of England's performance in the world cup.

Do people really think that way, are people so stupid they judge their own country by a a game of football, 11 men kicking a ball around a field ?

I'm not a football fan but this really is pathetic, do you agree?

No
Yes, most definitely.
Yes I agree. A lot of fuss over a stupid game with a circular ball. I mean come on ... is this how we judge a Nation?
Kind of, I don't think the team deserve all the stick they are getting, Other teams have played far worse and not gotten much stick, at least your country was in the World Cup, Ireland blame Thierry Henry for not qualifying!! What a joke!
I am ashamed for English football...not for being English. These "players" represented our country at the highest level in front of millions of people around the world.
Exactly suzey - at least England made it to the World Cup. That in itself means they're not exactly useless - just not the best in the world.
thats what I said, you cant be a true englishman if you wernt proud of being english before the football
Ireland blame Thierry Henry for not qualifying!! What a joke!

? er who was to blame then Shay Given?

o' wait the officials and there observational skills.
Absolutely Ratter. There is far more to life than football and if people judge this country because of England's defeat then I feel sorry for them.

I hate this whole football culture thing anyway. Of for years gone by when football was a sport not an industry with over paid workers and where sportsmanship actually existed.

You can't judge a country by it's football!!

A german won the F1 on Sunday am weeping and wailing - no.
I may be wrong but I think part of the problem is that the English Premier League play far more matches than other countries, so the players are knackered before they even get there. I do not however equate being proud to be English with the performance of the national football team.
'Oh' not 'of'
Their not there lol.
craft, i can remember playing on a saturday morning and then again in the afternoon. i loved it. Next day, right as rain, no problem. If these professionals get a knock it's sorted straight away. We just hobbled at work for a few days
RATTER...it is called PRIDE.....pride in the way your country is performing in sport, pride in the way how clean your cities are, pride in the way you behave in other parts of the world, pride in the way you treat you Armed Forces......just proud to be English.

Unfortunately this is fast becoming obsolete......we have regional pride, but we are losing our National Pride.
A national team's performance in any competition reflects on the country itself. It may not be what folk judge the whole country on but will clearly have a short term effect. And the embarrassing defeat is still fresh and raw.

I don't understand why some folk have to make a fuss at the obvious and natural disappointment of others, who try to have a pride in their county's attempts at sporting glory. Fine if you don't personally want to get behind your country's team, but do you have to mock basic human nature ?
so we won't be seeing any England flags for another four years, then?
Always proud to be english, just felt let down by the lack of commitment in the game against Germany,, The team looked tired and unfit... but that is no excuse for Rooney to stand stoney faced during the national anthem... A friend told me it is because he is of irish descent I don't know if that is true or not.... but if it is he should play for them not England if he feels that strongly Saying that Ozil apparently recites verses from the Koran during the German national anthem each to their own I suppose
Nobody is mocking the disappointment of the football fans. It's natural, but it is somewhat over the top when people just keep on and on about it and start blaming all and sundry. So we lost, next time perhaps we will win. There are other sports out there why does football have to be of prime importance.

How's England doing with the cricket! ;o)
2 years jno
OG, there's a big difference between 'natural disappointment' and the Sun yelling YOU LET YOUR COUNTRY DOWN all over their front page. Ratter's right, some people need a sense of proportion.
