I've got wood effect vinyl in one downstairs living room on a solid subfloor, and in the kitchen on a wooden suspended floor. They are great - hard-wearing and easy to clean. Two drawbacks - the vinyl will show every uneven bump on a wooden floor, so you'll need to board it over before laying, which adds to the cost, and heavy furniture can kind of dig into the vinyl leaving indentations. I think it is a great finish though, and much more capable of withstanding a good wetting than laminate flooring.
I agree with what mosaic says. I have a wood effect floor and I wished I had boarded it - my uneven old boards underneath are making stress points in the vynil.
i had lino for years in my lounge and hall. I still have it in the bedrooms.
Definitely board it first. I would also make sure that you are happy with the position of the furniture! There's no changing it around once it's in!
