Contradicting religious beliefs.

It seems that whatever aspects of religious beliefs held they can almost always be disproven to a certain extent. For example someone could say the bible was written by God, and it could be proven that it was written by man and so on and so forth. I just wonder why so many people are religious when, if they put forward they're held views and beliefs a lot of them could be contradicted with evidence?

Because they refuse to consider anything that contradicts their beliefs. We have had an example on here recently of someone who believes that God determines the sex of child 40+ days after conception and who refuses to look the mound of proven evidence to the contrary detailing the real facts. That's what brainwashing does to people.
Aside from the amoral philosophy and bizarre claims that conflict with known facts the Bible contains numerous inconsistencies between stories. The faithful refuse to acknowledge this and prefer to claim that it is being misrepresented by people with malicious agenda.
Their faith is the foundation of their entire existence and anything that conflicts is automatically presumed to be a misunderstanding. These people are a lost cause and there is little point to trying to get them to change.
Better to focus on preventing young people from indoctination so that these disgusting stoneage beliefs eventually die out.

Majority rules? What, you mean because they believe lies and promote superstition, the rest of us should concede that they're right? Heaven(?) forbid! Fortunately some of us retain possession of our own intellect and hence our ability to reason.

Ummmm, I know we have discussed this before about cherry picking, I don't really have a problem that you cherry pick.
I also remember you saying, that you like to think that your deceased parent is looking down on you and its a nice thought that she is in a lovely place.
My Mother recently passed away, I also like to think she is in a better place and that she can look down on me and I kind of believe that but in reality, I also know it isn't a fact.
The fact is, my Mother passed peacefully, she was an extremely devoted and caring mother (she also looked after the elderly, like I do) My heart and mind still hold so much love and feeling for, so many fond memories If there is a heaven she would be there but I know there isn't. I still see my Mother looking down on me, I still see her in a peaceful place with no pain and suffering.
What we conjure up in our minds is from the memories and all the love we had and still have for these kind, loving folk, it doesn't need to be about any god.
Ummm, I'm not trying to change your beliefs, what I'm saying is you don't need to cherry pick, I have all the same thoughts and desires for my lovely Mum, but I have these without bringing afterlife or religion into it.
Either way, the most important part of all this is that you feel that your Mum is in a lovely place and that she still looks down on you and smiles, my Mum does the same every day. best wishes :-)

My Mums alive RATTER. It's my Dad that died. I'll get a picture of her....have a look on FaceBook.
She's a religious nut though. I remember painfully sitting in my Grandads house and her telling him he'll be going to hell unless he repents his sins. He was about 80 at the time....I find that behaviour really un-nerving..
My Dad's was Catholic and Mum Protestant but she brought us up Catholic as she vowed when they got married. The best day of my Dads life was the day I said I don't want to go to mass anymore...

oooops sorry about that uuuum, I actually thought it was your Dad but then I started going on about my mum and got crossed over.
I actually have a sneaky suspicion that have many doubts over religion but not quite prepared to take hold of the horns of that proverbial bull.
We all need to just be happy in our beliefs at the end of the day.
