Lazy Gun's post is spot on.

For a long time the religious have been the purveyors of the dominant paridigm and had no need to shout from the rooftops. Their dogma has been entrenched in civil law for the entire span of recorded history.

For centuries atheists have chipped away at this dominance and in some cases paid the price with their lives. Modern atheists sense an opportunity to completely undermine the foundations of religious influence and have seized it.

And why not. Women were oppressed for time immemorial by religious dogma that designated them a chattel of the men in their lives. Now it is the time for homosexuals to shake off the burden of stigma loaded onto them by the church.

I proudly stood up for women's rights in the 70s, I rejected the twisted morality of the church over marriage, I tread my childen as my equals, I support the right of people to love whom they choose.

I will loudly and proudly continue to berate the church.

It is strange that the atheists who have no 'word of god' to unify them in their struggle against ignorance all agree on the principles of rationality yet theists cannot agree on any matter pertaining to religion (which is why there are so many).

More than 2,000 atheists from around the world are gathering in Melbourne, Australia, to celebrate their lack of religious belief.
It isn't often that you get together with friends to celebrate what you lack. But the Global Atheist Convention isn't just any gathering. These aren't just run-of-the-mill atheists; these are devout atheists, filled with a lack of spirit.
They won't sing hymns of praise, and they won't hear inspirational messages. Oh, there are so many lacks to celebrate! The participants will be reminded of the dangers of a "fundamentalist" approach to atheism (don't ask me), and reminded that they must not show "missionary zeal" in their desire to share what they lack with others.
Sounds like a hell of a party. I'll miss it. Did you But I'll be sure to celebrate my lack of participation.

It seems that Atheism has a vested interest in how well these people perform. Every time I see a football game, I see players kissing crosses & pointing to the sky after getting a hit. I hear actors giving God credit for their Oscar/Golden Globe/ etc... It seems that although we are taught from an early age that we must take responsibility for our mistakes, the same doesn't hold true when we do well. In that case we're supposed to give credit to an unseen, unheard, unfelt & unknown God.

Why does this only apply to good things? If I murder someone and then claim that "God made me do it" I'd be locked up in an insane asylum faster than you can blink. However, if I save a life and then say "God gave me the strength" it's perfectly normal. Why the double standard for a supposedly omnipotent being.

It might be acceptable in some circles, but I think calling it 'normal' is stretching it.
