Can we please put aside our petty and pointless religious differences just for one day and remember the fallen, who gave their lives so that we may have the freedom to discuss such topics openly?

Have just read your post Zacs-Master. Good idea but can we not put them aside every day?

Of all churches’ wholehearted support of their nation’s wars is that Christianity is viewed by millions in non-Christian lands as a warmongering religion, and they want nothing to do with it.

Yet, some concluded to justify today’s religious wars by noting that God approved of the killing in ancient Israelites. Yet, that is no justification for professed true Christians to wage war today.

Because the Israelites were directly instructed by God to act as executioners of his righteous judgments against demon-worshiping peoples, whose worship included gross sexual immorality and child sacrifice.—Deuteronomy 7:1-5; 2 Chronicles 28:3.

Also evidence that the wars of ancient Israel were no ordinary conflicts is the miraculous nature of the victories that God gave the nation. For example, the ancient Israelites were once directed to use horns, jars, and torches—hardly instruments of classic warfare! On another occasion singers were positioned at the front of an Israelite army that was facing an overwhelming force of invading armies from several nations.—Judges 7:17-22;
And when the Israelites engaged in wars that were not ordained by God, they were not blessed by him and they suffered defeat. So therefore, cannot be invoked to justify the wars today.

Can you see now the real reason why the great wars of this century are so important? They fulfill Jesus’ prophecy. No other wars of history measure up to the two world wars. Only a suicidal third world war could be greater, but Jesus was not prophesying that, but were to continue and even intensify after their outbreak. Without a doubt, his prophecy has had fulfillment in the world wars that began in 1914.
well that waffle is there verbatim on the jehovah witness net and four or five other sites too...........
Well,Jehovah God, the Creator of mankind, is the Source of the good news. The Bible is his Word of communication with us. Look where you may, you can find this good news nowhere else.
out on day release?
Wardlaw’s ‘best’ answer is ill thought-out and incredibly short-sighted. Putting religious differences aside permanently would result in a complete absence of criticism of any of the appalling beliefs and practices of religion, including, amongst other things, female circumcision, marriage of little girls to grown men, a ban on birth control leading to misery, poverty and the spread of disease, filling young or susceptible minds with demonstrably false information and teaching it as fact – and one just for Goodlife – the complete rejection of life-saving blood transfusions. Unless they can hand-on-heart agree that all of that is acceptable in the 21st century world, those who make such thoughtless sweeping statements, together with those who would rather the R&S section here didn’t exist at all, should think very carefully about what they’re actually promoting – and when they endeavour to stifle the opinions of the atheists here, what they are actually attempting to silence.
^ the voice of reason . . . and their own conscience. ^

Why is it the conscience of the innocent speaks loudest . . . or are they simply the only ones still listening?
Goodlifes most recent missive is, as has already been pointed out, unattributed cut and paste, which is simply poor practice.

When you summarise the post. the salient points seem to be that its alright to slaughter people, implement a policy of genocide, if your god says so.

And anyway it cannot have been proper genocide because they used horns and jars and stuff- so they have been misunderstood - it wasn't pre-emptive war based upon the voices in their heads and some allegedly distateful practices carried out by another tribe - it was more like a student demonstration!" Demons out! Stop Inappopriate Sexual Congress Now!" "What do we Want? The End to worshipping a false god! When do we want it? Now!"
Oops, I accidentally appear to have slaughtered all of you with my jar.

Yeah, rite.

Your bible is soaked in the blood of innocents, sacrificed in the furtherance of the deluded who imagine they are acting on the orders of an allegedly omnipotent deity, when in reality they are acting out their own warped imaginations to defend the rights of a jealous god.
Mibs, //or are they simply the only ones still listening?//

So it would seem.

It would seem the answer to my original post is 'No'. Somewhat saddening.
The 2 minutes silence was observed.

You posted a request - some agreed with your request, others thought you presumptious in that request and told you so. This is an open forum, designed for debate, and you are saddened when such debate happens?

And the framing of the question was poor, in my opinion and many others here, in this section. Most people who post here do not regard religious differences as either petty or pointless.

So I am not sure that you have a right to be saddened, analysed objectively....
Zacs, //I just thought that as the relatives and descendants find the act of rememberance through religious ceremony comforting //

That post clearly indicates that the reason you requested people cease contributing here yesterday was not in order to demonstrate respect for the fallen, but to concede to the perceived sensibilities of anyone who might be offended by anti-religious comment. Bearing in mind the content of some of the subsequent posts which demonstrate that criticism of religion is neither petty nor pointless, and outline in no uncertain terms the reasons why it must not, under any circumstances be suppressed – not least the fact that the very people most of us were thinking about yesterday fought for our freedom - I see nothing sad about the rebuttals your proposal received.
it monday here so im ok

Naomi, I strongly suspect (although I cannot prove it) that previously atheist or simply a-religious people who have suffered the loss of a close relative due to war, find comfort in the albeit quasi religious occurance of Rememberance Sunday. I felt that for us (note the 'us' ....and the 'we' in the OP) to recognise this fact by ceasing the sometimes quite pathetic sqabbling which posts in R&S descend into, would be a nice gesture. It's as simple as that.
Zacs, I’ve no doubt you posted your request with the best of intentions, but personally I think those intentions were misguided. Observance of such a request would have been just as likely to make those who had lost their faith through war thoroughly sick to the stomach!
Question Author
I must admit, I had not considered those who might have lost their faith due to the attrocities of war. This is why I 'persevere' with answerbank. It's quite enlightening and challenges ones own perceptions.
It is indeed - and long may those challenges continue. We live and learn. ;o)
True christians are commanded to show love for their enemies by doing good to them. “Continue to love your enemies and to pray for those persecuting you,” said Jesus. (Matthew 5:44)

That is why Jehovah’s Witnesses do not cease preaching the good news of God’s Kingdom again and again to their neighbors, even though some do not respond to that message. (Matthew 24:14) But you read lazygun, we bear in mind that Jehovah will determine who merits his love and who deserves his hatred. He is the final Judge in matters of life and death.—Hebrews 10:30.
Question Author
I'm normally not a praying man, but if you're up there, please save me Superman. Homer Simpson Series 3 episode 6.
Goodlife, 'Who deserves his hatred'? How horrible! Personally, I don't much like anyone who harbours hatred - hence I prefer to choose my company rather more judiciously than you.
Well,If prayer is to be answered it must be directed to the right One
