Should the church have women bishops ?

Two women were offering their opposing views on the radio today.

There were similar arguements when women were first made priests and a number of men vicars left C of E to join the RC. Some claim that both churches gained by that . It was said that those that left were RC at heart anyway.
You may remember the Pope made quite an effort to get them into his fold.

I'm not surprised as the laity seem more intense than the clerics themselves. It is the laity who seem to need the crutch of the supernatural and think the bible is factual whilst the clerics see it more as a philosophy.

If somebody could please tell me what a Bishop actually does then I shall pass judgement on whether I think a mere woman is up to the task. Thanks.

Of the seven traditional sacraments of the church five can be administered by a priest ( one can even be administered by a layman in an emergency) but two, confirmation and ordination are restricted to bishops.

I really really think that the lay women who are against it are the ones who believe they run the parishes now and see themselves being disempowered by ordained women.

woofgang According to several interviewees it is not the grass root parishioners who objected, it is those who get themselves elected into the laity . They are a bit like the shop stewards who supposedly talk for the members. They are the pushy intense ones . It was this laity synod whose rejection vote caused the motion to fail.

I believe not in the UK but there are women bishops all over the world from New Zealand to Africa.

indeed modeller and that was part of my point. I was also commenting about female parishioners that I have seen interviewed. I would call myself a "theist" in that I believe in god but I wouldn't say that I was a practicing member of the church of england.

I believe the other theists who haven't replied to this thread may be of a mind with Dr Johnson when he said: "Sir, a woman's preaching is like a dog's walking on his hind legs. It is not done well: but you are surprised to find it is done at all."
