I won't pretend to have any great expertise, but my guess would be that the reason Islamist fanatics are so up in arms is precisely the same reason that religious fanatics in the USA have been so up in arms over the last few decades -because they're losing. Education is anathema to radical Islam because it eradicates radical Islam.
An agricultural college !?!?! What was so bad about what they were to learn anyway ?

Droves of people leave Islam every year. More information is available now to your average person than ever before, even in the middle east, and it is extremely difficult to sustain religious faith when you know more about the world.

Radical Islam acts in the foul way it does based on an assumption that is essentially correct - they are under a very serious threat. Unfortunately for them, their enemy is Progress. It doesn't matter how much innocent blood they spill - they will not win.
Krom, absolutely right. Education is their enemy – but they won’t stop it. They are fighting a losing battle – and that is, as you say, borne out by the thousands abandoning Islam. No one in their right mind chooses oppression over freedom.
