And here I was, thinking that Scientology was just a cult for daft, credulous Americans with more money than sense. But according to a British Supreme Court ruling, Scientology should now be accorded the same status as Christianity, etc.
You couldn't make it up if you tried !

Doesn't a proper religion have god on it's side?

Mormonism isn't all that old, and that is based on the most absurd fiction. The Book of Mormon, the musical, [ Spoiler alert !!!] is based on the premiss that anyone could create a new religion right now, and lure followers from Mormonism. That is quite plausible. After all, people who are devout Mormons have accepted that it is possible to "believe six impossible things before breakfast", so must be capable of believing six novel ones.
I am going to build a shed in my back garden and start a new religion. It will be called Clooneyality. I will welcome all who share my view 'Good God, he is so lovely' as well as people who prefer to follow Bradism, HolyJolie or Deppoligy. As long as you play nice and don't try to convince me that Bradism is better than Clooneyality you will be fine. Please bring your own food as I am skint. You can eat what you like but smoked haddock will have to be consumed outside as I can't stand the smell.
