We design our superstitions in our own image/images. Warrior races have warrior gods, advanced races have hypocritical religious bureaucracies that say 'though shalt not kill' and then collaborate with the political leaders and the aristocracy to allow millions of their young men to march off to their deaths.
If you look at our sick society objectively you have to say that people on the psychopathic spectrum are in the ascent and the individual is a mere pawn in their games.
But if you look closer and see the little or not so little acts of kindness, empathy and even the forgiveness of others that mercifully are commonplace in our society, you will realise human angels are among us and always will be.

You never know, open your heart to the suffering of others and you might find you're an angel yourself- no god, religion, or superstitions promising life after death required! As the hero of the Potomac says- it's a human instinct, always was, and always will be, if you want it to be part of who you are.

Many non-believers do just that - but they do it quietly. They don't feel compelled to blow trumpets. ;o)

Naomi- you are right. The true 'angels' are people who do wonderful things first and think nothing later of the whys and wherefores of their action. Politicians and religions try to hijack such people and claim them as their own, but at the moment of their angelic transformation there is only a deep, evolutionarily conserved instinct guiding them to acts of heroism and self-sacrifice.
Khandro- I think it's pretty clear that 'non-believers' in this context means people who have not been indoctrinated into accepting as true the existence of some kind of deity and an afterlife. In the complete absence of any credible evidence for either of the above I am rational enough to count myself among their number.

Colmc54, I don’t believe that anyone has a moment of ‘angelic transformation’. People are either altruistic by nature, or they’re not.
Having said that, there are people who adopt the mantle of altruism in order to convey the idea to others that they are indeed ‘angelic’, but pious duplicity is not, in my opinion, an admirable trait. The ‘angelic’ are surplus to requirements.
Khandro, although I’m sure your question wasn’t necessary, Colmc54 has answered it.

So just what are angels? They are beings of a different nature than humans, but created by God and for God.
The Bible describes how they sometimes act, how they sometimes appear. It also details what they sometimes do. So if one studies all the passages in the Bible that mention angels, one will see that the angel is a very powerful being that can:
Appear as normal human beings, undetected (Genesis 19:1-29, Hebrews 13:2)
Appear as bright, shining beings that terrify those who see them (Matthew 28:2-7)
Appear to animals, but invisible to humans (Numbers 22:21-40)
Appear in flames of fire (Exodus 3:2) and in dreams (Matthew 1:20-24)
