I remember reading, not so long ago, about Christian missions in China that do charitable work, such as providing care for the elderly. They are left alone to get on with such work by the government, which doesn't provide much in those respects. Such projects were said to be leading to a spreading awareness and increasing interest about Christianity among the population.
There may be as many as five million professional fortunetellers in China.
Apparently many people have a double standard, since they will not admit in public what they practice in private.
One author says that this reluctance is due to a fear of appearing silly to others. Thus, such individuals may prefer to call their superstitious customs routines or habits.
