Do Your Life Have Any Meaning?
118 Answers
Take a man in his 80’s thinks: ‘My life is nearly over. It’s gone so fast. So little is left. Where did it all go? What did it mean? It’s all behind, nothing’s ahead. Except the grave. Yes oblivion. How pointless it all was! No wonder the cynic says, “Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die.
‘Well, I lived a full life, you may say. Supposedly this means death is now acceptable. But does a full life that is past make dying easier to accept? Or does it make it harder? Would it not be easier to leave an empty life than a full one? No one says, “I’m so happy I’m going to kill myself!

Lack of Bible knowledge DOES cause a person to think their life span is not long enough...to do all the things they would like to. And especially so if theirs or others life is cut short due to illness or accident. Jehovah's promises solve all these... promising an end to death that now we all experience.. .and for those who die, they are given a second chance......

Jehovah's promises solve all these...promising an end to death that now we all experience...and for those who die, they are given a second chance...
And all that is asked in return is obedience to easlily obeyed laws and standards...
1. Love God [ Jehovah] and love [ respect] your fellow man.
(Matthew 22:36-40) “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 He said to him: “‘You must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind.’ 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 The second, like it, is this: ‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments the whole Law hangs, and the Prophets.”
(1 Corinthians 15:26) And the last enemy, death, is to be brought to nothing.
(Revelation 20:12, 13) And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and scrolls were opened. But another scroll was opened; it is the scroll of life. The dead were judged out of those things written in the scrolls according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead in it, and death and the Grave gave up the dead in them, and they were judged individually according to their deeds.
Once Satan is removed, it will be easier...
(Revelation 20:10) And the Devil who was misleading them was hurled into the lake of fire and sulfur, where both the wild beast and the false prophet already were; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Rubbish.
My FIL was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer yesterday.
The chances of him lasting 1 year is 19%.
He is a life long atheist and his acceptance that he hasn't got long in this world has been bubbling since his open heart surgery at the end of last year. Talking yesterday, he is very happy with how his life has panned out - he has done all the things he wanted to do, and doesn't begrudge the fact that he probably doesn't have a lot of time left. He was very blunt on this point and non-romantic, and I admire his honesty. He has never tried to hide his opinion before so I know he was not trying to make us feel better, he just doesn't work that way, it was how he really felt.
So Pugwash, please explain again your above statement and provide links to back up your research on this matter? How do you know this?

Live your life the bast you can. Everyone is different. The end of life is inevitable, you can't fight it. every life has a meaning to the life concerned. The success or otherwise is dependant on what you want from life. If you achieve what you want fine. It doesn't have to involve huge amounts of money or material things to be happy. There is so much to enjoy that costs nothing. Treat others as you would wish then to treat you and life can be happy. That is the measure of happiness and meaning.
Yes, life does have meaning. My life has meaning.
As a Christian and an offspring of Adam and Eve, I know we are here to populate the earth, to care for and cultivate it, and to look after its plants and animals.
I have a loving family and we are all Christians, we all believe in God and that there are better things ahead for us than this mundane existence we have on this earth today.
We try to live our lives in a way that brings glory to God and his son Jesus Christ. We would not harm our fellowman, (at least not intentionally) and follow Bible principles inasmuch as it is possible for imperfect humans.
I don't worry about the wars, terrorism and evil in this world because I know that soon it will all be done away with and we can look forward to a life of peace and long life.

In the big long term scheme of things no-ones life has a meaning, however in the shorter more focused term, everyone's has, so be nice. I try to be kind, helpful, fair, loving, fun and a nice person to have around. Sometimes I fail, sometimes I don't, but I don't beat myself up over it because you need to be nice to yourself as well. Just do your best is all anyone can do.
So far as I am aware God has promised to rid the World of evil, diseases etc. It hasn't happened yet. Indeed, on the diseases front the current score is God 0, Mankind 2 (and 2 more coming up). The only reason that we've not chalked up a third in Polio is because some extreme religious nutjobs in Africa are convinced that the Polio Vaccine is a Western plot to poison their children and make the men infertile or some such nonsense.
It's not always true, of course, but it does sometimes seem that the more you wait for your God to solve the problems of this World, the less inclined you are to fix them yourself. So allow me to offer up a reverse Pascal's Wager:
1) There is no God, in which case the only people who can combat evil, suffering, etc., are ourselves, and if we don't then no-one else will. Therefore, we should worry about disease and suffering and we should try our hardest to reduce and fight them.
2) There is a God, and at some indeterminate point in the future He will effect a sweeping change that in one stroke will create Paradise (possibly only for the chosen). In the meantime, however, we and many others will suffer from said diseases, so it makes sense to try to alleviate that suffering. After all, isn't that the sort of Goodly life that is valued?
So either way, the best bet is to stop waiting for God to fix the world and do it ourselves. Can't hurt.

Not sure about Africa, but that’s certainly happening in Pakistan.
Douglas, //All of this God stuff is weird enough day-to-day but seeing it written down lets you focus on the complete absurdity of it all. //
I think it's called shooting yourself in the foot. ;o)

If you believe you will spend your life worshiping.
If God exists then you will goon to spend eternity worshiping. All you will really ever get to do is worship.
If God doesn't exist then all you ever got to do was worship for a shorter time.
If you don't believe then, no whether God exists or not, at least you got to experience a meaningful life.
