Do you think applying this verse would help marriages last? Read Matthew 5:28.

Goodlife, the verse is irrational. If God created man, it follows that the sexuality endowed upon man is unavoidably innate. Religion thrives upon burdening the faithful with groundless notions of self-reproach – and expects him to be grateful for it!

Clanad, another contradiction of disputed authorship written in the process of manufacturing the greatest lie ever told - Christianity.
Goodlife, //Jesus knew that what we take in through our eyes can affect our heart. //

Is that why you close your eyes to reality?

Do you not read between the lines then?
....

end because women get tired of writing on their eye patches, 'not tonight darling I have a headache'....

for wonderers: Mt 5 28 is: " But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart."

[ hard words: epithymai - look lustfully, moikeuo - commit adultery ]

No I dont think this would stop adultery.
1640-1700 when this sort of thing was taken to heart, was there less bonking behind the arras - well no I dont. See Scarlet Letter - fiction I know but is set at a religious time and is all about adultery

Meant to add @ 2035 & 2036 ^^^^^
The Bible is just another work of fiction. Jesus Christ is no more real that Gandalf, but both have their shallow blinkered followers. Until we rid the World of these superstitious cults and their exploitative leaders, there will be no peace for mankind.

No to disregard its standards is to invite problems and unhappiness.

To heed God’s Word, including its wisdom for our figurative eye, is to sow happiness. “Happy are those hearing the word of God and keeping it,” said Jesus. (Luke 11:28)

What is more, they have the prospect of remaining forever on earth, whereas those who cultivate an immoral or greedy eye lose out on both happiness and life, so it your choice.
Goodlife, I repeat, the verse is irrational. A thought is not a deed.

Most people I find, if stopped to think about it, would agree that religion is something that is too important to be left to chance. Why, even in everyday matters, we try to control our own lives as much as possible. Who wants to be just a victim of circumstances.
. The quote is as above by Builder, Scorpio and Giz.

and is rendered thus by all English translations apparently.

Naomi do you have a ref that it is an interpolation in earlier document ?

It has all the signs of ipsissima verba to be honest: it is in the form of a pericope, " you have heard do not commit adultery " balances with 'and I say to you'
and contrasts old teaching ( commandment ) with the new ( christianity )

so if anyone said can you put your finger on ANYTHING from the first 30 y of the first century , I would point to Mt 5 28 and say - this fits the bill.

Whereas if you read Clanad's pauine quote ( which I did and thought that it obviously wasnt a gospel ) it talks about something that has happened just a short time ago....

and if all this was enacted into English divorce law, would it cut the numbers of divorces ? No I think not

but it still nice to see Good life at work again

Just saw this in Latest Posts ;-)

Goodlife, I don't have a problem controlling my life, and when circumstances arise that are beyond my control, as they sometimes do, I deal with them rationally. I find it very sad that you need someone else to tell you to remain faithful to your wife. Not much of an accolade to her really.
Peter, //Naomi do you have a ref that it is an interpolation in earlier document ? //

I'm not sure what you're asking for.
oh, Nigh
Clanad, another contradiction of disputed authorship written in the process of manufacturing the greatest lie ever told - Christianity.

sorry I thought was serious: that this verse was an interpolation.

no matter at least it got me to think about the verse and the context
Well, one thing about Goodlife he is not a 'closed book'.
Peter, I didn’t indicate an interpolation, but that the authorship of the whole piece, which is commonly attributed to St Paul, is disputed.
Gizmonster, using the logic in the passage from the bible, just by window shopping you are in fact a shoplifter. Just by looking at a pig you have eaten unclean meat and by visiting a graveyard you have committed suicde. Daft innit?

The Bible says: There exists a friend sticking closer than a brother.” (Proverbs 18:24) Have you found such a companion? If so, you have found something special.

The Bible also says that there is “a time to keep quiet and a time to speak.” (Ecclesiastes 3:7) you know younger children often can’t tell which course is appropriate in a given situation.

When a companion does something wrong, they reason: ‘I don’t want to get my friend in trouble’ or ‘I don’t want to get into trouble with my friend.
However, if you have grow up naomi, you begin to look at such matters from a more mature viewpoint.

You realize a friend is already in trouble and needs help— then what you say . I find it very sad that you need someone else to tell you to remain faithful. Not much of an accolade really, and that why the world is like is today, people can,t tell the truth.
// if you have grow up naomi, you begin to look at such matters from a more mature viewpoint//

I have and I do. Why don't you try it?
Gee, naomi, I was only responding to Chris' quotation of the verse, which was simply incomplete. I note that your rather orgulous statement did not include his/her initial post, only my later offering... unique concept, no?
