God helps us to cope with them. I know I am going to be castigated, I am no theologian. He is helping through all the good impulses and deeds of individuals. Sorry, reluctant to talk in order to be shot down, but I believe in goodness as the opposite to evil - and there is plenty of that around. :)
Same old type of obvious question.
Where is your proof that a deity is causing it ?
How do you suggest a deity helps, assuming you know what really constitutes real help in the bigger picture, without causing humans to simply be come dependent and taking no responsibility for their actions, because whatever, God will sort it out to their satisfaction anyway ?

If you believe...
We are in a time when God has given man and the devil free rein over the Earth so that we may learn we are not capable of governing ourselves.
When we have learnt the lesson he will then swoop in and after a period of turmoil will put everything right and erase the memories of suffering so they do not affect us as something that was endured but remembered as a lesson learned.
Then we will all live the kingdom of God here on Earth as the Bible foretells.
So regardless of the hardships, trails and tribulations endured now they will be as nothing when we have learnt that only Gods way is possible to live by.

In one part of the world people die every day because the do not have enough to eat and on the other side people are eating too much and are becoming obese. The same people are wasting so much that could easily wipe out hunger of many a millions.
No I have a question for you, my God tells me that I should not have a stomach full at night if my neighbour sleeps hungry. If I don't act upon it then who would you blame? Me or my God?
Now that was my side of the story who believes in God. Now you obviously do not believe in one so no way you could blame God so what lfet there for you to blame? You, yourselves.

Muntin //It is odd, is it not? God allows this situation to arise and when prayed to, chooses to do nothing or is unable to do anything to help.//
Yet he rained manna from heaven upon the Hebrews for forty years when they couldn't find their way though a desert crossing that could have easily been covered in a few weeks.
He must be enjoying watching their suffering as He is so prone to do.

douglas9401 //God is a manager, gets all the credit for the work of others.//
And in typical narcissistic manager form, He blames His subordinate fallen angel, Satan, for absolutely anything that goes wrong.
You really wouldn't want to work for God but millions have applied for the advertised positions.

//I believe an acceptable position for a non-believer is to respect the beliefs of others, insofar as those beliefs do not lead directly or indirectly to harm to anyone//
Not entirely convinced by that Andy, firstly you'll need to define "harm". Would you consider your parents telling you that demons exist, that the naughty burn in hell for eternity or that it's OK to accept faith-based 'facts' as opposed to scientifically examined phenomena as 'harm' - I would. I have zero respect for anyone who follows any religion as they clearly have little to no ability to think for themselves.
//Do people respect the beliefs of others or do they respect the right of others to have different beliefs, which is quite different? //
In terms of religion; I have no respect for the beliefs, I have respect for the situation that ALLOWS people the right to hold different beliefs but no respect for the people that make use of this right and I singularly fail to understand why any of you would have, or profess to have, the slightest respect for the charlatans and sheep that use this belief system to continue to lie and decieve both themselves and those around them.
And in answer to the OP - you're whistling in the wind if you expect a sensible answer from a "believer".

Clearly, God knew that the human family could never be successful in regulating itself without his rulership.
So vain attempt to be independent of God’s rule, He let all humans have there different political, economic, and religious systems.
All these differences have brought people into constant conflict with one another, resulting in starvation, famine, violence, war, and death.
“Man has dominated man to his injury.” (Ecclesiastes 8:9)
That is just what has happened throughout human history. As foretold in God’s Word, wicked men and impostors have continued to “advance from bad to worse.” (2 Timothy 3:13) And the 21th century, which saw mankind reach great heights in scientific and industrial achievement, yet see the worst calamities ever.
The words of Jeremiah 10:23 have been abundantly proved—humans were not created to direct their own steps.
So only by letting the human family go its own way, God has, once and for all time, demonstrated that we need his rulership. His way of ruling, his sovereignty, is the only right way.
Only then it will results in the greatest happiness, satisfaction, and prosperity. This is because our minds and bodies were designed by Jehovah to work best when in harmony with all his laws.

And it starts:
Goodlife:
//God has, once and for all time, demonstrated that we need his rulership. His way of ruling, his sovereignty, is the only right way. //
From your post I can only conclude that you idolise someone who condones genocide, slavery, child abuse, rape and murder - this would be "the only right way" would it? I'd like to hear your justification for adopting this position.
//The words of Jeremiah 10:23 have been abundantly proved—humans were not created to direct their own steps.//
There's very little that has been 'abundantly proved' in any field, Rather than just regurgitating chapter numbers how about offering some examples?
//Only then it will results in the greatest happiness, satisfaction, and prosperity. This is because our minds and bodies were designed by Jehovah to work best when in harmony with all his laws. //
This takes the biscuit; superfluous, trite nonsense which uses a lot of words to say absolutely nothing of value.
These views are worthy of respect are they? Really?
