I have been an Atheist all my adult life, so I am not remotely surprised by this. I have also worked on the BSA survey for 8 years and seen the percentage of people describe themselves as not religious grow over that time.

Anybody else surprised ?

C of E does indeed seem to be the default answer but its the trend that the BSA survey shows that matters. Much less people are prepared to say C of E than used to.

Another aspect of this is shown when you break down the results into age groupings. The younger you are, the more likely it is that you will give an answer of no religion ::::

At this rate, its likely that religious belief and church attendance will rapidly become an activity confined to OAP's.
Two of my friends are practicing Roman Catholics and their church is packed on Sunday. Lots of family groups, Indians, Eastern Europeans, Italians. All sorts.
mikey ...good morning.....re. you survey, any idea as to the percentage that admitted being religious.....male/female?
One gets the impression that it may well be, on the whole, a "woman's thing"
Brought up by religious grandmother..CofE, Methodist, Spiritualist...anything, she just couldn't get enough of it..;-)and i was dragged along. The Spiritualist meetings scared the hell out of me, but when i had the experiences of hospitals and deaths, i knew and still do, that there is no God.
Some people need religion, like some people need ant-depressants.....then fair enough...why not?
No I am not surprised about the results.

Most of the Catholic churches in my area are busy every Sunday as well Tilly, and one of my brothers attends. But that is probably because of the amount of Polish people we have living here in South Wales.

I have a close friend who is a serving Church in Wales priest, and she tells me that her average turnout at the popular 10:30 service every Sunday is about 30-40 people, and most of them are OAPs. And this isn't out in the sticks, but in a large, predominately middle class, town, that is effectively a suburb of Cardiff these days.
Our Catholic church is packed every morning, not just on Sunday - in our town we have 3 large catholic churches and 2 Priory - all are packed every morning for 10.30 Mass, not many Eastern Europeans in them
sqad //i knew and still do, that there is no God.//

I believe that rather depends on how you conceive, 'God'.
Do you mean 'perceive' ?
I'm not surprised by the decline of Christianity. The Mosques seem to be doing pretty good business though.
And them wot are religious are mostly muslim!
Khandro/Zacs.......good point Khando.
I DON'T perceive God, so that question is superfluous to me, but, as an answer, an anthropomorphic, omnipotent, all powerful influence on the evolution. maintenance guide to the well being of mankind.

Sqad...have a look at my link above, and it gives the full demographic breakdown.
Mikey, Sqads posts are about the existence of God, not who worships him.
"As expected, we see that men are slightly less likely than women to belong to a
religion, while, among those who do belong, women are more likely than men to
attend religious meetings. "

As I suspected, it tends to be a woman's thing although less than I would have expected.
My mum is a happy clappy born again Christian :-)

As a teen I went to town with my friends. I got a nudge from a friend asking was it my mum singing 'Jesus love is very wonderful'

Yeah...it was...bless her. My sister found it very embarrassing but I didn't. It made her happy.

I'm an atheist but she still writes bible quotes in my cards.
Thirty percent of Australians indicated they had no religion in our 2016 census. That exceeds the next highest group being Catholics at about 23 percent.

The trend towards no religion is accelerating at each census. The no religion figure rises to 39 percent for 18-35 year olds while the religions of those who do have one are more likely to be non-Christian.

Zacs //Do you mean 'perceive'//

No, I meant conceive, as in, 'what is your conception of God'.
sqad says he doesn't perceive God at all, i.e. he has no experience to affirm it, which is his a priori personal stance, but has nothing to do with the existence of God or not.

Cannot continue this now as we are off to the Casino in Tübingen for lunch. :0)
I wonder how many of those so called atheists choose to get married in church?

Not that they stick to their vows these days, judging by the vast number of broken marriages that we now see.
Sqad can't 'conceive' God. If he did, he would be Gods father and, whilst I have a lot of respect for him, I don't think he's that significant.
It would seem that soon we will no longer be a Christian country but an Islamic country, happy with that are you?
Zacs.....LOL.
