Embarrassing is when.....after years of genuflecting in church....you go to the pictures......and genuflect before entering your row of seats.......... :-(
Now here’s the difference- I was always taught the a proper genuflection was the knee actually touching the floor - otherwise it’s really only a curtesy. It’s done whenever entering or leaving a pew or whenever in direct line of the blessed sacrament.
When meeting the British Head of State, it is customary to go down on one knee.......when meeting U.S. Head of State it is customary to go down on both......allegedly. :o)
An alternative to genuflecting, especially for people like me who, by reason of age or infirmity, cannot manage it, is bowing. The C of E BCP makes such a provision dating from the time of Cranmer.
