I'm just back from visiting there ( have a friend who has lived there for 40 years). The last words to come to my mind would be 'cess pit'. I was not doing the usual touristy bit (although I did do 2 tours to cover main sites of interest), I was, rather, living there - walking the dog, going to the supermarkets, shops and markets, going to meetings and meals with friends. I loved it! Mind-opening.

The words which spring to my mind regarding Bangkok (a short version of the real name) are skyscrapers and green shanty-town.
Yes there were large ads. for massage salons - and I met people who had been for a simple massage and who swore it had helped bad backs etc.. There was a scandal breaking in The Bangkok Post as I left and I assume the OP is about this, but jet-lag renders me a bit behind the times, the misbehaving salons were being tackled.

Bangkok is built on a delta, it floods. The difference between land and sea is tiny. Nevertheless, they have just opened the first stretch of an underground railway!

As I said, I cannot agree with the 'cess-pit' label.
The home of the expression 'The Thais that bind'

Don't even start on Phuket. :-)
I have always thought that the capital of Thailand is very aptly named.

fair enough jourdain but how did you deal with the embarrassment? I mean telling anyone you are going to Thailand is tantamount to having "sex tourist" tattooed on your head. I'm amazed they have a tourist industry left beyond Thai Brides and Lady boys.
There's no embarrassment in going to Thailand, we don't all dwell in the gutter TTT.
What a strange opinion, Tora. I think it tells us more about your mind than Thailand or Bangkok. My boss and his family go on holiday there frequently. They stay in 5 star hotels in the city and beach resorts. Anywhere which has a Mandarin Oriental isn’t a cesspit. At least you’ve spelt it right this time. Maybe try joining the two syllables now, eh?
You wouldn't want to spend any time in the Bangkok Hilton.

have a word with garaman he talks bowlocks and nit picks spelling too.
The only one talking bowlocks is you old bean. I take it you’ve formed this opinion from talking to your chinas down the old bull and bush.
'nit-picks', it should be hyphenated, just sayin'...
LOL.
