Just so that I don't highjack another's post....

Why is Jesus held in high esteem?
Anyone that has read the gospels with a critical eye (as opposed to the eye of faith) will see that Jesus is the antithesis of a moral human being.
He disobeys his parents and tells us that if we were to be his disciple that we have to hate our own parents.
He tells us that he hasn't come to bring peace but to divide families one against the other.
He compares a gentile that asks for his help to a dog.
He whips temple servants for selling merchandise.
He curses a tree for not bearing fruit when it was out of season (bizarre to say the least)
He condemns his enemies to eternal torture while telling the rest of us to forgive them...bit two faced if you ask me.

The list goes on. The Jesus that the gospel writers portrayed was not a decent human being.

Jesus is held in 'high esteem' only by religious people - and the numbers seem to be dwindling there. I have no desire to read the Gospels, so all your examples are wasted on me - as they would be to most non-believers. Maybe some of the AB believers will be able to help you.
Did he even exist or was he made up to make people behave themselves by making them worry about what would happen to them after death...promise of everlasting life in paradise ....??? Just like most religions really!
and he can't command a regular place in the Man City first team.
Of course, I agree with you Nailit. But maybe you are bashing your head against a brick wall.

The irony is, is that Jesus is held in high esteem as a moral teacher. But only by those that know nothing about him....

Niether would I normally Baldric, but when we have Bishops sitting in the house of lords deciding our future on the basis of such stupidity then....
Nailit, I think there are 26 bishops in the House of Lords. Of the other 774 peers, I think there will be at least 26 firm non-believers, so the bishops shouldn't have too much power.

But even only 26 religious fruitcakes is 26 too many ;-)
I prefer to be ruled by logic and reason, rather than superstition and fear!...
he disobeys his parents? Fortunately, the Old Testament has an answer for this kind of bad behaviour: disobedient children are to be stoned to death.

Perhaps if you disapprove of Jesus and the New Testament, you'll feel more kinship with Leviticus and the Old?
jesus is not a good example to follow

Because I abhor one set of religioius writtings doesnt mean that I approve of another!
well, what do you think? Disobeying your parents - good or bad?
// there are 26 bishops in the House of Lords//
and one of them was an atheist so you were in good company there Nailit

(Bishop of Durham) - when the dear old bugga retired, his parishoners were asked who they wanted to succeed (Bishops are appointed by roman catholics like tony blair - none of this popey stuff)

It must remind you of the young doctors of yesteryear Sqad,

So you would like to be ruled by the other old wind bags that got the jobs by brown nosing and fiddle their expenses and appearance money.
