I never think this strand of argument is valid - it infers that direct experience of something is essential in order to have an opinion on it.
I don't need to know one end of a Gibson Les Paul from the other (although I do actually!) in order to know that Jimmy Page is a prodigiously talented player of said instrument.

‘it infers that direct experience of something is essential in order to have an opinion on it’
Not essential at all. Just gives a bit of gravitas to ones argument to have actually experienced what life is like in the bosom of that particular religion, rather than talking from an assumed viewpoint. Forgive me for my preference for informed debate.

// What is PP's obsession with the Irish?//
erm there were these people who used to shoot everyone called the IRA and people thought they were Roman Catholics which I am - and so I was linked with irish terrorism which I strongly objected to
erm there were these other people who used to shoot everyone or stab them called ISIS and people thought they were Muslim, which various other people are - and so they get linked with terrorism which they strongly object to
there are other people so thick they dont see the obvious parallel when it is spelt out to them
but hey - this is AB so I really ought to used to it by now

That somewhat pre-supposes that anyone who has spent any time in a Muslim country is automatically conversant with the intricacies of its faith, which is nonsense.
I live in a Christian country, and have spent sixty-four yrars and counting in it - but I would not presume to pronounce on the finer points of Christian doctrrine, because I am an atheist.
// Forgive me for my preference for informed debate. //
No need to be sarcastic, everyone likes informed debate, but let's not assume that level of information to be at a particular level, especially with no evidence to support that assumption.

Naomi - // To have an opinion experience is not 'essential' - but there are opinions and opinions - and experience doesn't go amiss. //
No argument there - but there is a danger that people align experience with knowledge, which is not the same thing.
As I have pointed out previously, I have undergone eye tests and had glasses prescribed for me - it doesn't make me an optician.

AH, //I have undergone eye tests and had glasses prescribed for me - it doesn't make me an optician.//
That’s because you're not trained as an optician. You can’t build a house either – because you haven’t learnt to build.
//let's not assume that level of information to be at a particular level, especially with no evidence to support that assumption.//
Assumptions are misleading. Evidence is available to anyone who looks for it.
Khandro, I’d say it’s a religion with 100% politics tacked on. The two are inseparable.

You’re putting words in my mouth again. It doesn’t pre suppose anything. What it does do is make that persons argument/opinion more believable.

Eh?
