Getting A Refund

I am supposed to get a refund on a payment I made online. At the time I just clicked onto a link for the p&p and gave (unfortunately) my account details.

However they took £79 from the account saying that I should have cancelled within 14 days.

Anyway without going into the nitty gritty - my friend has phoned on my behalf 4 times and 4 times the assistant not the same one has said we will refund the money as a gesture of goodwill.

It is now 3 weeks since the first call and again when friend rang yesterday - assistant has said "we are experiencing delays" and it should be in next week which would be 4 weeks.

Do any of you think this will happen or not happen. Thanks for any answers.

I'm not clear what's happened here. What's the refund for? Have you returned the item? Was it for a subscription you didn't intend to make?

On the first telephone call they didn't want the item returned. It could have lead to a subscription which I truly didn't sign up for BUT they made sure that 14 days was up before they took the £79 from the account and so they are alleging I should have "cancelled" within the first 14 days.


You must have signed up for it - perhaps you didnt read the small print properly. Although undoubtedly there are a lot of firms out there who practice some "sharp" methods of trading.

As to whether you will get the money back, who knows.

Its possible you may not - in which case just chalk it down to experience.

Thanks for your answer BM - I know 100% I did not sign up for that subscription.

On that page was 2 links - one for the p&p and the other was the subscription which I did not click on to.

Was it Amazon Prime you unwittingly signed up for? I know they do charge around that figure, it is something that you have to be aware of. There may be benefits for some who order lots of things via Amazon but not if you only make the occasional order. My husband pressed on the wrong button but thankfully he realised and I cancelled immediately.

No furry - it was a payment and nothing to do with Amazon.

So are they saying you signed up to a subscription of some sort?
You could ask your bank to dispute the transaction

Yes FF - I have to go to my bank today and get that sorted - and see if a subscription has been started - but I know I won't get the £79 back.
The bank will refund you if you paid by debit card and explain a) you have not received goods or b) you unwittingly signed up for a subscription and the retailer will not refund you. They then recover the money from the Retailer.

The chargeback process is not a legal requirement and as the company has not said it refuses to refund the money, the bank may not be interested after this point.

Why did they not want the item returned?

If the item and the subscription were separate, both would need to be returnt or cancelled within fourteen days of informing the supplier.

I have asked for at least one refund on a low-cost item on Amazon and they said it need not be returnt.

the longer you wait for something the more unlikely it will occur within a set time frame
( JIm will know the name of the Law)

so if the universe has existed for 12 bn y (I am looking at the long term) then there is a 90% chance it will continue for 4 bn more

well called into my bank and an assistant rang England for me. They have blocked any further subscriptions but unfortunately they can't refund the £79.
