Sony Xperia Z3 - Further Help Please!

I am puzzled! My notification tone is set up for Texts and up to now the tone rings - I open texts - and the message shows.
However over the last few days I have had three notification tones loud and clear but when I go into texts there is a blank screen which says ' no notifications'!!
I got my wife to text me a few times and her text showed up immediately. Can anyone explain what might be happening? Phone calls arrive ok.
Certainly my wife is also on vodafone the same as me but that should not make any difference?
Have checked my settings for SMS and everything is ticked.

Instead of going straight to texts, swipe down from the top to see your notifications. Not all notifications are texts!

I looked and I do get some notifications which I swipe down - but no sound for these.
I set up the notification sound specifically for SMS and when it sounds and not text shows there is still a little figure 1 above the text icon on my homepage.
I will keep checking
