God is gender-neutral. Since the beginning there has been a typo - the prayer begins 'Our Fother...', rather than Father or Mother.

I wonder though if padres on either side prayed to win or if (more likely) prayed simply to help them get through the awfulness of it.

If indeed folk on either side prayed to win then I'd say He listened to both. Both got an answer. One answer was a "yes" and the other was a "no".

How or why He decides to answer things is something no human will ever know.
