My grandson wants to cook a beef stroganoff for his mother. The recipe needs beef stock but he won't be making his own.

a He wants a quick solution such as a stock cube or stock pot.

Would either do, or can you suggest something else?

I'd use a beef stockpot in any case.

Most supermarkets sell beef stock in bags these days

Stock pot or you can nut a litre of stock in the supermarket.

Thanks all, I think he was worried it would be too beefy.

Apologies buy a litre of stock, obviously you wouldn't want to nut a litre of stock that would be messy!

I've used stock cubes satisfactorily,or failing that gravy powder/granules.

He's good with curries, Bolognese and chilli con carne type dishes but he hasn't yet got the confidence to deviate from the recipe. That will come, he's just turned 15

Perhaps I should have said pouches. I seem to remember James Martin recommending them

Not a bad idea to grasp the basics first - experimentation can come as he becomes more comfortable. Sounds like a fine chef in the making 😋

Any of the Knorr beef sauce mixes in packets. He will learn how to mix and get rid of lumps for when he does make his own sauces

I use the jelly pot stock thingies for anything which calls for stock, they're really good.

And now I really, really want stroganoff 😋

What a lovely boy! Is he going to use mushrooms as well?

Would it still be stroganoff if he didn't, Tilly?

What a lovely boy wanting to cook that for his mum x

Probably not, Vagus, but you can overdo it with the mushrooms and spoil the taste.

Further to my erlier post, I have on rare occasions used packet soup of an appropriate flavour as stock.

I've often used a tin of oxtail or French onion soup in stews and casseroles

Avoid Oxo cubes = 30% salt!

Try products on sale at Aldi or Lidl where the salt content is much lower - and so is the price.

No need for stock fry onion and mushroom, add strips of beef. Add mace salt and pepper then add a dollop of crème fraiche or cram at the end
