One doesn't need to claim to be atheist, which is a statement of belief that there is no deity, in order to not have a belief in a deity's existence. One can acknowledge the inability to know, then decide whether they feel the same about spiritual matters in general.

 

Besides, one generation seems to have a natural tendency to want to differentiate themselves from their parents' generation.
