The saying goes, "ignorance is bliss"
18 Answers
I work in a residential home with 35 residents, the home is divided into two halves, upstairs being elderly people who just cannot look after themselves anymore and downstairs being for severe dementia.
The residents suffering from severe dementia are always so much happier than the ones with all their faculties.
and of all 35 residents we only have one that moans a lot and can be unpleasant at times.
So are old people really always moaning as Ive heard on here, I cant say Ive noticed it myself.
Does that prove that ignorance is bliss?

I work in social services taking calls from elderly and their families etc., we have a few regular callers who do nothing but moan moan moan, but the majority dont and get on with their lives.
There are even some that get on with their lives but have so little that i think i would be moaning or if not giving up,.
I posted a question the other day about are we happy with what we have cos some have nothing and want to die but dont moan about it all the time, they just sit at home walling away with no one to talk to.
I think there are moaners old or young to be honest

I totally agree Ratter. After my nan broke her hip my grandad who was already going senile but ten years her senior at 92 had to go into a nursing home. He was put in residential to begin with but then went to nursing. He knew he was going senile and it would really upset him. He went rapidly down hill in there and died within 18 months.
My granny has dementia now and she is a bit mean with it too. She doesn't realise most days but when she does she sobs for ages and apologises for all the mean things she has been doing (namely accusing all of us of stealing stuff).
One of my other grandads though was totally senile and he seemed very happy despite being in an ugly mental institution not a nursing home.
If I could wish anything, it would be that this hadnt happened to any of them. Although just that they didnt know about it would be a happy second for me.
Scares the pants of me that I am gonna go that way too though.

As you have noted Ratter, a lot of old people dont have much going on in their lives so to spark up a bit of confab they pick a topical issue to moan about. But this is not age-specific.
Many people love nothing more than to have something to moan about. Particularly those who have nothing interesting to talk about. Age is often immaterial as it is the lack of things going on in a particular persons life that leads to their amorphous ramblings about nothing in particular.

I work with eldery people with disablities and also ones who have dementia.
I also work with younger disabled people but not in a Residential Home.
Most of them are fun to be around, some moan or the sake of moaning and a few have every illness under the sun.
As another aber said, and it is true. If someone is a moan and not a very nice person when they are young, then there is no way they will turn out to be nice old ladies and gents.
The one thing that most of them are guilty of, is claiming seats as their own. I keep telling them there are no names on seats.
Some of them have nothing to take up their day.
So, I can honestly say, I would be hesitant to generalise the lederly. They are a mixed bag, mostly all great!

Well, my darling mum is heading for 91. She lives with me and I am her carer. And of course you help too when you aren't at work, RATTER love. I have to honestly say that she very, very rarely moans about anything. Mum spends most of her time in bed, even though she is actually quite capable of getting up and getting around. She is always in a good mood, if often very tired. I consider myself very lucky to still have her in my life and still be able to enjoy her company and sense of humor.
