Is Bill Gates more powerful than God?

Now, admittedly I didn't see the programme but apparently Bill Gates is going to use $24billion of his own money towards good causes. Say, for example, two people get an almost incurable disease ie, a lot of money will pay for an operation to cure it. Now, one person prays to God and the second writes a letter to Bill, and receives the amount of money for the operation. Who do you feel would survive and would you take any comfort from it?

I wonder why your aunt doesn't offer her services to the medical profession. She'd save the NHS an awful lot of money.

Good question- My aunt did offer her services to people when she was around, now she is not. She died few years back but knowledge never dies and all you need is belief. Then I am sure there are still few people who can heal people but these things are only effective when you do for the sake of goodness and not for monetary benefits.

Well, if that's the secret, I wonder why more people aren't successfully cured at Lourdes? The sick go there in droves and the vast majority return just as sick as before - and it's certainly not due to a lack of faith.

Sometimes improvement in well being is not about being cured, but receiving a sense of hope and comfort, as well as future friends and commonality.

Lourdes can do this in droves. So whilst sick people do go there, there are not many that assume they will be cured, but are looking for some spiritual comfort and unification with other sufferers, healthy people, other believers/non-believers (yes they go too), young, old, friends, relations and strangers from all nationalities and walks of life.

Naomi � Sometimes death is the biggest and most comforting cure and you may want to verify this with terminally ill people or people who have lost control over their body for either age or other reasons. As Octavius said as well. Cure is not only being able to jump up and down again. The concept of cure changes from people to people and from age to age.

"Wellness," is a word coined by a big multi national that includes health, but is more general than that I think.

As Keyplus has said, there is more to "Wellness," than simply good health. Mind AND body are included.

Keyplus, Octavius is right. Sick people do find comfort in their faith, but isn't the point because it's something very different to your contention that to be cured all you need is faith.

Incidentally, I think Theland was joking. Apart from that, do we know what Bill Gates thinks? I have no idea if he's religious or not, but whatever he thinks, he shouldn't be condemned for what he's doing. He doesn't need the publicity, and he could very easily keep all his money for himself, so at least he has a charitable heart and there must be some goodness in him.

Maybe B.G. is thinking, that if he doesn't do something good with his dosh, he might die one day and have to answer to God for not being charitable, so he's become a philanthropist.

I think a million or so of his money would be put to good use by being deposited in my bank account, to prove to the world that fat unemployed 57 year old grandads are worth saving, if only to be put in preservative for museums.

Whickerman said it all with one post. Octavius and keyplus are backing each other up, but I think one is muslim and the other christian so it don't make sense, as there are two different gods involved there. Thing is I don't wanna make this a religious debate in particular but just want to point out that if you've got a bit of money behind you you've got a better chance of beating illness than if you use prayer. Take from that what you will. Money will mostly win over hope(belief).

If you have a bit of money behind you, you have a better chance at most things. I am not sure anyone here claimed that faith as a cure was more certain than donations to pay for an op.

And if you prefer to wait around in hope for some cash to come your way, and deny the existence or reject belief in God or any god in the meantime, then that is your call.

Chances are that the cash won't come your way unless you are really lucky, so you may be left in the same hope and anticipation of faith in medical science or a miracle, as those who have spiritual faith.

Styley � First of all God is only one, others are misconception. All the religious scriptures in the world talk about only one God. If you believe the Octavius is backing me up or vice versa then it is fine any two people can say same thing. As far as you are saying that our gods are different then I think you are wrong. If anyone believes in what Jesus (pbuh) himself said then there is no difference at all.

Naomi � I never said that all you need is faith to get cured. Yes I did say that if God does not want you to be cured then no medicine or wealth or any thing could cure you, otherwise rich people would never die. Again, Islam does not forbid you to seek medical or any help in trouble or illness.

Theland � You do not have to apologise for paraphrasing me, good words can be repeated as many times as possible.

In the end I believe BG has earned enough money but could not buy happiness and peace of mind so he decided to step down and start looking somewhere else.

Why do you think Bill Gates is looking elsewhere? Maybe he's always given a lot of money away, but we just haven't been aware of it.

Yes you definitely misunderstood. But I am quite used to it now so not worried at all.
Octavius has answered your other bit. Why do I think he is looking somewhere else. Good question. Answer is that he surely is not satisfied with what he has done so far and thinks that he could have done more or simply God is showing the real side of the life to him now that You can not be satisfied with money only. A lovely saying of someone, when God wants to have his mercy on someone then he makes him utilize his God given blessings for the betterment of humanity.

After all you do not want to be the richest person in the grave.

So according to you, Bill Gates isn't satisfied with his life, and is seeking more, or God is using him for the betterment of humanity. It seems you want God to hijack and claim responsibility for whatever is going on, as long as it's something good. I would imagine that, in reality, Bill Gates is extremely satisfied with his life, and his achievements, and rightly so. Good for him, and all credit to him. You're quick to undermine the real benefactor, but you're also very eager to give credit where none is due.
