From previous postings I know of your interest in China, in fact you have pointed me in the way of several good books.
I wonder if you have read 'To the Edge of the Sky' by Anhua Gao.
If not I can thoroughly recommend it, it is a true story of love, betrayal, suffering and the strength of human courage suffered by Anhua under the communists, not only in the time of Mao, but also after his death, until she was finally able to escape China to settle in England, much in the way that Xinran did.
