On your technical question, the Hebrew is transliterated as Yam Suph, which probably means Sea of Reeds or possibly, in the aftermath of the event, Sea of Storms. It was the Greek version of the Hebrew Scriptures, the Septuagint, which gave the reading "Red Sea": Erythra Thalassa was their name for what is now the Red Sea. The similarity in English is just a coincidence.

Sound like tsunami to me, the red sea is part of a rift valley, so earthquakes wouldn't be unusual. Perhaps waiting for a tsunami is what took them 40 years.

it sounds like one of those folk memories that has found its way into scriptures and been attributed to deliberate action by a god. Noah's flood would be another one: it almost certainly did happen, though not to the whole world, just the Black Sea, and probably wasn't sent to punish anyone.

Someone suggested that the parting of the Red Sea might have been a description of what we now know as a tsunami, where the sea draws back rapidly from the shore, then comes crashing back in a mighty wave.

It must have been a short crossing for the whole of the israelites to get across without being swept away, whether it was a tsunami or wind storm.

Is it conceivable that there is an error in the old testament..... Moses 'sorry this was supposed to be the red sea or possibly the dead sea but it's only the nile'.

Nile is my personal thinking. Although parting of sea has been mentioned in Quran too but word used is “Behar” which means sea. But on entirely personal note.

20:77. We sent an inspiration to Moses: "Travel by night with My servants, and strike a dry path for them through the sea, without fear of being overtaken (by Pharaoh) and without (any other) fear."

20:78. Then Pharaoh pursued them with his forces, but the waters completely overwhelmed them and covered them up.

And verses after these in the same chapter give more detail about Moses (pbuh) and people around him.

The Bible states that God caused this...And considering God created ALL the earth, it is no wonder that he would be limited from using fluid dynamics to fulfill his purpose...to save his people...

The Bible states that the waters were ' held back'...the forces we know of could not have done this..neither gravity or strong wind....

And considering that the Jews numbered around 3 million...it would have taken three days for them to cross the Red Sea at that point...and all that time Pharoah was held back by the pillar of fire....again not a natural phenomenon...
It was a miracle.

It was a MIRACLE by God....Fluid dynamics are limited by the forces we know of...gravity and wind.and even tides....
Remember that the Jews numbered around three million and it would have taken three days for them to cross the Red Sea...and all that time, Pharoah was held back by the pillar of fire...
AND note that the Jews crossed over on a DRY seabed...not damp from the retreating waters...
Which it would have been IF it was a natural event,,,
