Would you categorize this as a form of identity theft?
If he made/stole the fingers for his own use it may be classed as identity theft.
To cover up his colleagues absence it's fraud, which is what he's been charged with.
Not really a theft. The other employees either expressly consented, consented by conduct or the defendant thought that they would consent if they knew (and so is not dishonest) . But it is fraud in that he is acting dishonestly to gain a benefit for another, the employee who would be paid for time when absent, and to cause loss to another, the employer who pays, if the deceptive act is not detected.
