Do The Moderators Get Monitored

It is always a pity to return to AB to find a question has been deleted or a post has been removed. It is especially annoying if you have read the deleted item and found nothing wrong with it.

I assume it is the work of an over zealous moderator rather than the Ed.

Have any moderators ever been sacked?
Do they get told off if they delete perfectly good posts and threads?
Do you keep a record of moderators actions?

On the whole, this site works well, but over censorship is spoiling it slightly in my opinion.

I don't think you are supposed to reveal if you are a moderator or not.

I would not have deleted stuff from yesterday that has disappeared.

I think there are exemplary horsewhippings once a month to instil discipline among moderators, but you still get the occasional rogue mod. Not everyone agrees on everything.

Not yet.

If we can't see the reason for removal we'll reinstate it. Usually we can see the reason.

Yep, and we get email alerts when they're taken.

What kind of threads are you thinking about?

If I have already said it, then there is no point in not confirming I am a moderator. Maybe not a good one because I certainly would not have trashed the BBC thread or DTCs posts. I may have been a little curt on the BBC one, hope that isn't why the whole thread was binned.

AB is an excellent site, and we invest our time and energies for free because of that. If our labours are so easily disposed of, then we may be less encouraged to join in.

On a related issus - What I have found somewhat vexing is when an Original Post is removed, and all the subsequent contributions from different posters - It worries me that my inability to find a post means I am suffering early-onset dementia, or that the OP has been removed.

Would it not be possible to leave the title of the thread,together with a comment to the effect that the OP has been removed on the grounds of poor taste,or libellous comment etc?- Unless the title itself is deemed libellous or offensive, of course :)

Case in point - In R&S, or maybe S&C there was an OP about Scientology that appears to have been removed, unless I imagined it - but I have no clue why - certainly from what i read of the post and the answers, there seemed nothing worthy of deletion of the whole thread....

I only ever delete spam. I prefer to let posts stand so that readers see the authors in their true colours. I realise some of the views expressed on the site may not be what the owners of the site want to be associated with, and I understand why they go.

most sites have some rules. Those that don't can be very unplesant. Even apparently harmless YouTube pages can descend into a mire of frothing insults. I'm happy with the way AB is run, even if I don't agree with some moderators' actions, just as I don't agree with some whole threads. It's not exactly a major breach of anyone's human rights.

I agree with jno, all in all, I think it is run very fairly. Ok, with one or two hiccups, I can live with that.

An excellent idea LazyGun if it is technically possible. Part of the annoyance is the worry that you have mislaid a thread, and you look everywhere before you conclude that you are not losing your marbles and that the question has been zapped.

I am not really bothered about the BBC one going, but I had posted an excellent Spike Milligan clip which is now lost.

The BBC one seemed harmless enough to me, I was slightly flippant on it but I thought the thread as a whole was good. I've only ever been really upset about someone removing one of my posts, other than that I think it's more or less okay here.

The BBC one looks like a mistake, but it wasn't a mod. I've reinstated it. I'll have a word and see if there was anything else going on for it to be removed...

The others I cannot see as having been removed?

In general I can't see any issue with the moderating over the weekend - maybe I am missing something?

most of the threads I have asked to be deleted
concern on going criminal cases that people insist on commenting on
and then insisting they have a right to (they don't)

One must get one's pissy little comments in, in these cases before charges are brought

I think Sally Bercow's case has taught us if you really have a LOT of money you can chase naughty naughty posters (and ruin them)
