Judicial Complaint Filed Against Me...

I had a phone call yesterday, claiming to be from a Detective Constable, telling me I had a judicial complaint filed against me. I told him I thought it was a scam and he cleared down after saying he'd put it in writing.

Today I have received an email from the Ministry of Justice, saying I have had a judicial complaint filed against me, and giving a link which will show the details of the case. I haven't clicked the link.

The email says that if I don't respond within 15 days, the case will go ahead without me.

Is there a phone number on the letter supposedly from the Ministry of Justice? If so ring them for further information.

What exactly did the caller say? How did they get your email address and phone number? Did the caller know your name?

Hi all, thanks for replies and for the link.

I don't know how they got my details but they know my name, telephone number and email address (I'm guessing these details are obtainable if you are determined).

There's no telephone number on the email, but there may be one on the document they've given a link to (which I haven't clicked). Husband has advised not to click the link as I might get a virus on my computer.

He has suggested I ring the non-emergency police for their thoughts, but I'm wondering if I should just ignore it. :0/

Have you got the phone number of the detective who phoned you yesterday? You could google or ring that maybe?

If you have the phone number that called you google it and see if it comes up.

Don't phone the number - if its a real (not genuine) number then you would be confirming to the scammers that you may be easily fooled in the future

Sherrardk, no, I didn't take his number. Perhaps I was a bit hasty in telling him I thought it was a scam. I must admit I was a bit surprised at how quickly he cleared down.

Surely if you're in some sort of trouble with the law, they'd put it in (paper) writing, rather than in an email? Or am I out of touch with modern procedure?

No, I haven't done anything that I can think of that would justify a complaint against me (well, I sincerely hope not!)

The caller's number was not shown - it just said "International" on the display.

Print out any relevant e-mails then take them down to the local nick and ask for clarification.

International call - scam! If you are being a accused of something it has to be put to you properly, normally within a certain time scale, you have a right to legal representation, plus judicial complaint um strange wording. Your husband is right, but if you get another call ask for their collar number, which station/ dept they are from, so that your solicitor can contact them.

Obviously some sort of scam. If they call again, answer it with "DCI Chappie speaking, who is calling please."

Legal papers cannot be served by email unless there is an order for substituted service or you agree.

In any event any legal claim would come from Her Majesty's Court Service.

Unless you are aware of potential threatened action, I'd view this as a scam.

Thanks Barmaid and Ken. I'm going to delete the email. I'm just baffled at what they'd get out of doing something like this, as they haven't asked for any money.
