Hi,I am a part time housekeeper in a hotel,I have worked there for 13 months but iv had to report my department manager twice and thats just for the major issues.3 weeks after starting she docked my wages 1.5hrs for apperently being to slow,i had only just started and she knew i had no previous experience as we discussed this at my interview, but i had just started and didnt want to stick out for the wrong reasons,so i didnt say anything,
She would not leave me alone after that and followed me around the hotel speaking to me throw gritted teeth and asking me to complete jobs she knew where impossable in the time given. After dealing with this for 4 months i had had enough and reported her to the manager,he said he would have a word with her and get back to me,he asked several members of staff who had witnessed it on different occasions and they all confirmed what i had told him but he never gave me any feed back infact he never spoke about it again.
In march of this year i asked for my day off to be on a pacific day as i had a funeral to attend(i have two days off over seven) i was given it but on entering the cremetorium my phone went and it was her asking if i had thrown out one of the guests newspapers i replied yes as they where over one wk old.when i returned to work she told me that she had compted the guest whiskey and newspapers for the week and id be paying for them(newpapers £10.00)which i paid but was not happy about as at the time i didnt know if this was legal or not.
Now i have put in a grievance because she went into my handbag and took out a packet of crisps i had,i attended a grievance meeting with my boss and ive just recieved my letter today telling me that because there is no witnesses no further action will be taken. The crisps are not the issue the fact that she was in my bag is the issue and the reason i know it was her was because i handed her my bag to take to her office and she handed me it back at the end of my shift.
I cant believe in this day and age managers are siding with bully supervisors who i may add has been reported at least 4 or 5 times by different people, she has bad reviews on trip advior and still she hasnt even had a written warning..........Is it just me or is this wrong........

From what you say they were party to your employment, do you know if they objected to your employment and were overruled, as this may be the reason they act in this way, I suggest you consider all the possibilities for this person acting in this way and try to establish why they do so.
Then speak to them over your mutual concerns, involve the manager if you believe it will help, there is a lot that can be achieved by honest discussion
Under employment law there are implied duties of mutual trust and confidence, if your personal possessions have been interfered with by your employer without your consent you are correct to raise a grievance, but it seems your employer has investigated your claim but is unable to satisfy themselves that it occurred due to a lack of witnesses. Remember your employer must be fair to your department head as well as to you.

Hi Tony,thanks for your opinions,
My supervisor interviewed me and was responsible for hiring me.
At first I thought of all the possiblities, maybe it was a personality clash, maybe she had just had a bad day, maybe things where tuff at home but after 13 months to be honest i dont care anymore,no one else has a problem with me and even if all of the above where to be true she is paid to rise above these issues and conduct herself in a professional manner. My work performance has never been in question so I know it has nothing to do with that either.
With regards to being treated fairly that is exactly my point...she was obviously clever enough not to go through my bag with anyone else there but that doesnt mean to say she didnt do it,having reported her behaviour and had it confirmed by at least 5 other members of staff 2 being senior staff where is my fairness..

Hi ojread2,thanks for your opinions,
No it is not in my contract, when I asked at the time she told me that because I signed the key and cash handling form that made me liable but infact on futher inspection it only states if I have room keys i must sign for them and if I am in charge of any till point within the hotel if there is any shortage I am liable to make the difference up....No mention of guests belonging at all.I did offer to apoligise in person to the guest but was told No.

Is this a privately owned hotel, or part of a chain? she's done wrong in stealing from your bag, and it certainly sounds like bullying. You shouldn't have thrown the papers away though - they're not yours to throw, people keep them for weeks for crosswords etc. why did you have to end up paying for them though?
This doesn't sound a good place to work, why do you stay there?

My hotel manager contacted me through a colleague today to ask me what i wanted and how i would like this to end.He has offered to pay me off due to lack of work which i take it, is so i can claim benefit until i find new work and just go away....He cant offer me anything else in the hotel as my supervisor also involves herself with all other departments,im sure this is the easy option but is it the right one....or should i appeal my grievance.thanks guys
Mum, I'd cut your losses and go, since a sort of helping hand is being offered to you. It's never going to get any better, and pursuing your grievance could be long drawn out and uncomfortable.
They're not giving you the sack, they are laying you off so there is no blot on your reputation. If I were you I'd accept, but check first that he will give you a reference if you need one in the future if you need to ask for one.

Hi boxtop,thanks for you opinions,
The hotel is part of a chain but there is only one in scotland.Your right I shouldnt have thrown the papers away as the guest was keeping them for souveniers but i am a cleaner and maybe on that occasion had done my job a bit to well...I have never made a mistake like that before and at the end of the day im only human.I also offered to say sorry to the guest in person but was told No.
My supervisor told me the reason I had to pay was because it was my mistake, then told a colleague that she charged me as i wouldnt learn otherwise.
