In several of yesterdays' papers the debate was raging about who was greatest team of all, the current Spain side or the 1970's Brazil team. I know Mick and I did this to death the other night, (when many Cobras had been consumed), and I still contend that Spain would destroy Brazil through their better conditioning, fitness and preparation, as well as the advanced tactics of the modern game, but I believe that each team much be judged on it's greatness within the context of its own era.

However, Lou Macari gave a hint yesterday that he may use hallucinatory drugs. He said that Brazil would wipe the floor with the current Spain side, as would the 1967 Celtic team. Honestly, I haven't laughed so much in ages. Not just beat them; "wipe the floor with them".

Maybe he had a bet on which team to go for? ;-)
Duncer in 1965 and i remember it well , united won 3-2 at old trafford ,herd, law and foulkes scored then away to the great benfica united won 5-1 charlton, connelly, crerand and best 2

1968 euro final beat benfica 4-1 , charlton 2, best , kidd

they must have been special to beat your great team
Duncer, thanks for your sympathy, as far as I know Tuffey is with the other Jags in Inverness, great keeper, but we just couldn't afford to hang on to him. Yes I was at the 71 final and have the dvd with Arthur "up go the heads" Montford doing his commentary, I think I'll go and play it now.....and I've heard every Thistle joke so don't encourage anyone.

I'm not saying that ManUre weren't great when they won the European Cup in 1968; to win the final 4-1 necessitated a fantastic performance against a huge weight of expectation and the legacy of the Busby Babes, but I was trying to define what I consider to be a "great" team of an era, rather as Spain are now.

United didn't dominate that era to mark themselves out as "greats" in that respect, that's all. My greats would include the likes of Ajax, Bayern, Liverpool, and AC Milan for their domination of an era.

Wharton, Tuffey now at St Johnstone with Steve Lomas.
